Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday confirmed the death of 25 people in the state and said that around 133 others have been injured after a massive earthquake hit India's northern region.

"As per the latest information received, the death toll in Bihar has reached 25. Some 133 people have been injured so far. Since there is a probability of after-shocks within 24 hours, it is important that we stay alert," said Kumar.

"We need to be cautious. The communication system was jammed in a lot of places today. The electricity has also been affected. I express my condolences to the people of Nepal and whatever happened there is unfortunate, but we will provide them with all kind of support. We are going to fight it together," he added.

Kumar further said Principal Secretary (Health) will be in touch with all the hospitals in the state.

"The SDRF is completely alert and NDRF teams have been sent to over five districts. The government and police officials will stay alert and keep monitoring the situation," he added.

Earlier in the day, the Bihar Government announced a compensation of Rs. four lakh each to the families of those killed in the state.

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Nepal has risen to 758, with 467 people killed in the capital Kathmandu.

The impact of the earthquake was felt in almost all northern states in India particularly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal.
