Australian Nick Kyrgios took down 21st-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny at the 2014 US Open men's singles opening round here.

The 19-year-old sent the Russian packing with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory Monday, reports Xinhua.

"I was struggling a little bit about the two-and-a-half hour mark, but I knew that if I hung in I would get that second wind where I could start playing good tennis again," said Kyrgios after the match, "and that's what happened in the fourth set".

Kyrgios became known to the world after beating world No.1 Rafael Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the Wimbledon fourth round, making him the first wild card to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals on debut since Florian Mayer in 2004, and the youngest player to reach the quarters at a Grand Slam championship since compatriot Tomic (18 years, 255 days) at 2011 Wimbledon.

The world number 60 would next face the winner between Sergiy Stakhovsky and Andreas Seppi.
