Employers are liable to pay Rs.50,000 as fine if they fail to adhere to anti-sexual harassment guidelines at the work place, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

The Supreme Court has laid down formal guidelines for dealing with sexual harassment at the work place. The guidelines state that all work places should constitute a complaint committee to tackle complaints of sexual harassment.

An employer will be liable to a fine of Rs.50,000 in case of violation of his duties under the law.

In case of subsequent violations, the amount of fine will be doubled, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said in a written reply.

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Work place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 came into force from December 2013.

Gandhi said her ministry had issued advisories to states and union territories to ensure effective implementation of the act.
