Scores of leaders and workers of the INLD and BSP courted arrest here on Tuesday as part of 'Jail Bharo' agitation to demand early construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal to supply water to the parched areas of Haryana.

The Indian National Lok Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance has been demanding early completion of the SYL canal portion in neighbouring Punjab, completion of the Dadupur Nalvi canal and regular flow of water to the Mewat region in Haryana from the Agra Canal feeder.

Addressing a gathering of protesters, INLD's Leader of Opposition Abhay Singh Chautala accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying the popular mandate to him and the BJP in 2014.

Chautala said that the Bharatiya Janata Party had failed to fulfil any of the promises made before the 2014 general elections and the Haryana Assembly elections in October 2014.

He said that neither employment was provided to the youth as promised, nor black money in foreign banks brought back to the country.
