Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the death sentence to four men in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case and said she was "satisfied" with the verdict.

"I am satisfied with the SC that upheld the death sentence of the Nirbhaya gangrape murder convicts," Gandhi said.

The SC bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice R. Banumathi and Justice Ashok Bhushan dismissed the convicts plea for a review of the May 5, 2017 verdict upholding the death sentence.

The Minister said the new ordinance providing for death penalty to convicts involved in rape of minor will act as a deterrent against such crimes.

"A Madhya Pradesh court recently awarded death sentence in a rape case involving a minor girl. This is the first verdict after the new law came into force. The stringent measures taken by government are working hopefully," she added.
