Congress leader confident of Sonia taking up overhaul of party

Press Trust of India  |  Hyderabad

Senior Congress leader in Telangana Marri Shashidhar Reddy on Sunday expressed confidence that interim party president Sonia Gandhi would pull out all the stops for a thorough introspection and undertake a complete overhaul of the party.

Shashidhar Reddy, a former MLA, requested Sonia to fully utilise the service of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in view of the prevailing circumstances in the country.

The rank and file of the party welcomes the unanimous decision of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to name Sonia as the interim president of the party.

After Rahul Gandhi announced his resignation as the Congress president in May owning responsibility for the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, the party cadres were in a state of disarray.

"Now, the cadres would gear up to make the party more effective to face the challenges before us," Shashidhar Reddy told reporters here.

In a resolution, the CWC on Saturday appointed Sonia Gandhi the interim party chief till the AICC elects a regular president.

On May 25, while rejecting Rahul Gandhis resignation, the CWC had recommended a thorough introspection and requested him for a complete overhaul and a detailed restructuring at every level of the party.

Also, the CWC had suggested that a plan to that effect shall come into force at the earliest, ShashidharReddy said.

Had Rahul Gandhi relented and agreed to continue, we were sure that he would have taken all necessary steps in that direction. He stuck to his decision and we respect it. We thank him for his inspiring leadership and request him for continuous guidance, ShashidharReddy said.

"We are confident that Sonia Gandhi will pull out all the stops for a thorough introspection and undertake a complete overhaul and detailed restructuring at all levels of then party in tune with the CWC,"ShashidharReddy added.
