Even as Girgaum residents brace for a day-long bandh on March 18 to protest against probable eviction of locals due to the proposed Metro-3 corridor, Congress announced here today that it would support their cause.

"These residents are protesting to save their houses. They will be left homeless....Thus, instructions have been given to the District Congress Committee to support these innocent people," Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam told reporters here.

He alleged that the government is being "unnecessarily unfair" to residents, adding that development cannot happen at the cost of human lives.

"Pick a route where you do not have to demolish homes and shops of people. Using this route won't be allowed," he said.

"The Land Acquisition Bill was introduced by the UPA government in the same spirit where farmers are not forced to part with their lands and they remain ultimate beneficiaries of government schemes," Nirupam said.

Residents of Girgaum and Thakurdwar plan to stage a day-long bandh tomorrow to protest against probable eviction of locals due to the proposed development of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro 3 corridor.

Local residents, Shiv Sena and Congress workers are expected to take part in the bandh.
