Court extends remand of 35 crew members of US ship

A local court today extended to November 13, the remand of the 35 crew members of detained US ship M V Seaman Guard Ohio, arrested on October 18 for illegally carrying arms and straying into Indian waters.

Judicial Magistrate C Kathiravan extended their remand to that date after hearing arguments through video-conferencing, as the crew are lodged at a Parisian in Palyamkottai.

The 35 crew were arrested by Tamil Nadu Police after the ship was intercepted by Coast Guard on October 12. The crew was also accused of illegal purchase of diesel from local agents.

They have been booked under the Arms Act and Essential Commodities Act.
 

Twenty-two foreign nationals among the crew are lodged in Chennai Puzhal Central prison while another from UK and 12 Indians are in Palayalamkottai Central Prison in Tirunelveli under judicial remand.
