Former chief justice of Meghalaya High Court T Meenakumari has been appointed the Chairperson of Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).

Governor K Rosaiah appointed Meenakumari to the post, which was lying vacant, for a period of five years, a gazette notification said here today.

The post was lying vacant since 2011 and the Supreme Court had on September 16 asked the state government to take appropriate steps to expeditiously fill it up.

The court had expressed concern over the Commission remaining headless for the last three years and asked the state to constitute a search committee to find a suitable person for the post at an early date.

The court passed the order on a PIL related to the 2008 incident in which students of the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College here were allegedly beaten up by some miscreants.
