Senior Congress leader and nine-time MLA Pramod Tewari and Samajwadi Party's Kanaklata Singh were today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.

Principal Secretary to the UP Vidhan Sabha Pradeep Dubey handed over the election certificates to Pramod Tewari and Kanaklata Singh in the Central Hall of the Assembly this afternoon.

While Tewari was present to receive his certificate, along with Congress MLAs and leaders, Kanaklata's certificate was received by senior SP leader Ambika Chaudhary.

Kanaklata has been elected on the seat that fell vacant following the demise of her father Mohan Singh and Tewari on the seat that fell vacant after Congress member Rashid Masood's disqualification on conviction in a cheating case.

Much significance is being attached to Samajwadi Party, which has majority in the House, deciding against fielding a second candidate and instead leaving the seat for Congress' Tewari.
