Tihar inmates treated to music by famous city bands

Press Trust of India New Delhi

Tihar's own band Flying Soul also performed along with the two city-based bands as an audience of nearly 3000 people listened with gusto.

"Our inmates enjoyed and learnt a lot. Music is a great stress buster and that is why this performance was encouraged. Ska Vengers have already taught some of our inmates in the past and today they also donated a good number of musical instruments to our inmates," Tihar Prisons spokesperson Sunil Gupta said.

Stefan Kaye, keyboardist of Ska Vengers said, "Prisoners should not be punished but be reformed when inside the jail. We believe music is the best instrument to help them in this act. I had voluntarily taught music and held music classes last year in the jail.

"I made friends with many and gave them tuition for over a month after I realised that many had interest in it. Today we also donated musical instruments to further help them. Who knows a great musician might be born out of them."

Musical instruments and sound instruments donated include five guitars, two base guitars, two harmoniums, three dholaks and a microphone and two keyboards amongst others.

The Ska Vengers is a ska band from New Delhi, formed in 2009. They have been making waves as their whose music is socially and politically charged. The band is comprised of Samara C (vocals), DJ Raghav Dang (guitars), Stefan Kaye (keyboard, vocals), Tony Guinard (bass) and Nikhil Vasudevan (drums). PTI SWT
