Two "notorious" criminals were arrested after a brief encounter with police in which one of them sustained bullet injury, in Vikas Puri area of west Delhi, police said today.

The duo Vakeel Ahmed (29), and Mohammad Asif (27), were arrested around 10.45 pm last night during a mobile checking by the local police, said Vijay Kumar, DCP(west).

A patrolling party of Vikaspuri police station spotted 8-10 persons standing on the roadside in the dark, near Agrasen Bhavan in Vikas Puri. As the cops went close to them, they started running away in different directions.

Constable Yudhveer started to chase two of them who headed towards M-Block while one of them, later identified as Vakeel Ahmed, fired one round from his country made pistol at the cop and tried to fire again when the constable retaliated hitting him in his lower hip, said the officer.

Assistant sub inspector Suresh Nand also managed to nab the other man Mohammad Asif, while the immobilised Vakeel was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, he said.

During interrogation, the duo revealed their involvement in a robbery at Dhauli Piao and a firing incident in Uttam Nagar, added the officer.
