Rain or thundershower is likely to occur at many places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal in the next 48 hours following an upper air cyclonic circulation (cycir) over north Bay of Bengal.

The cycir extended up to 0.9 km above sea level, according to the weather department here.

The state today experienced moderate to mild rainfall, the Met office said, adding that the precipitation was 25 mm at Canning, 22 mm at Kalaikunda and 15 mm at Diamond Harbour.

Precipitation was very low at Haldia, Midnapore and other areas, while most parts of the state remained hot and sultry in the absence of rainfall, they said.

The maximum temperature in Kolkata was 34.8 degrees Celsius, while Diamond Harbour and Digha registered 35.8 and 35 degrees Celsius, respectively, the Met office said.
