Cong To Stall Handover Of Tanwar Murder Case To Cbi

David Devadas BSCAL

Congress circles were making hectic efforts last night at damage control after they heard that the Delhi Police was planning to approach the Delhi High Court on Friday with an affidavit saying the probe into the Dr SK Tanwar murder case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

They feared that the police would hand the entire case file, including the statements of Tanwars wife to the court. Five senior Congress leaders could be implicated in the murder on the basis of some of the statements in the report. The police had prepared a final report some time ago but, under the Rao regime, it was put under the wraps.

The court has asked for a report on the investigation to be submitted by Friday. If the police hands over all the records in the case instead, the statements against Congress leaders could come to light.

Congress leaders had hoped that only the name of a former Youth Congress leader who already faces a high-profile murder charge would figure in the investigation report. They now fear that the entire sordid story may tumble out.

Some Congress leaders suspected that Nikhil Kumars removal as Commissioner of Delhi Police on Tuesday partly to ensure that he did not help keep senior Congress leaders names out of the report to the court. Kumar was sacked after some Delhi Police men shot two businessmen who were mistaken for wanted criminals.

A close relative of former Bihar Chief Minister SN Sinha, Kumar had helped PV Narasimha Rao to avoid appearing at the Tis Hazari courts for a criminal trial some months ago.

He informedthe Supreme Court that he could not guarantee Raos security in the court premises. Kesari, who also hails from Bihar, was close to the elder Sinha.
