Fci Declines To Extend Jute Bag Delivery Date Indents

Ishita Ayan Dutt BSCAL

The Food Corporation of India (FCI), Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, have declined to extend the date of delivery for indents placed on jute mills for supply of B Twill bags for the Rabi season.

Punjab and Uttar Pradesh however, have agreed to extend the delivery period up to 7.5.2000 and 15.5.2000 respectively.

The FCI and other state agencies had placed indents on jute mills through DGS&D for supply of a total quantity of 6.73 bales of B Twill jute bags for Rabi season against which a quantity of 5.86 bales has already been supplied till April 30, 2000.

The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) had asked for an extension of delivery period upto May 31 owing to the disruptions caused by the industrywide strike in the jute mills of West Bengal.

IJMA has also urged the state government to request the union ministry of textiles to withdraw the dilution order and place advance indents for supply of B Twill jute bags for the ensuing Kharif season.

The government of India is yet to take a final decision on the placement of advance indents for the Kharif season.

Sanjay Kajaria, chairman, IJMA, said if this lean period continues further, it will result in rotational closure of mills by the month of June.

Latest reports indicate that while the backlog in respect of Punjab has by and large been cleared, deliveries in respect of Uttar Pradesh are still to be completed, there being a deadlock on account of failure of the transport contractor appointed by Uttar Pradesh to lift the goods.

"If we exclude Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, there will remain a backlog of only 0.27 lakh bales on account of FCI, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, which works out to only four per cent of the total indents" said Kajaria.
