Hopes Pinned On Khetri Smelter Expansion

BSCAL

This expansion project is part of its plans to help it tide over the problems due to falling prices of primary copper on the LME. "HCL has pinned hopes on this additional inflow to turnaround from the present adversities," said a senior executive of the company. However, it will at least take two years to see whether the turnaround strategy brings in the desired effect.

The company proposes to go in for a global tender for its expansion project at Khetri soon after receiving clearance from the Public Investment Board. The project is expected to start operations by the end of 1997.

Hindustan Copper is expecting the clearance from the Public Investment Board in November, followed by clearances from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in January next year.
