Iran Hails Us Move To Ease Sanctions

THE HINDUSTAN TIMES

IRAN WOULD give a positive reply to the United States overture, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported today.

Iran is ready to give positive replies to each positive step taken by the US officials towards Teheran," the report said, citing Iranian ambassador to the United Nations Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian.

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright yesterday announced a lifting of import bans on Iranian caviar, carpets, nuts and dried fruit and also confessed to US interference in Iran's internal affairs in the past and offered a resumption of talks.

Iran gave a guarded welcome to the speech. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Assefi said: It requires time to carefully evaluate the speech as there are both positive and negative points in it.

Although it is a positive attitude by the US towards Iran it is not enough to make a big and fast change in improving relations," Nejad-Hosseinian added.
