Pollution Board Issues Showcause To 26 Firms

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued showcause notices for closure to 26 defaulting companies for not submitting a programme for installing pollution control devices.

The list of industries which have been served notices include six distilleries, two pulp & paper, two fertiliser and 15 sugar companies.

The distilleries include Shree Bilashwar Khand Udyog and Yeast Alco Enzymes Ltd in Gujarat, Hiranyakeshi Niyamit in Karmataka, Niphad Ltd in Maharashtra, Punjab Khand Udyog in Punjab and Pondicherry Distilleries Ltd.

The fertiliser companies include, Assam State Fertiliser and Chemicals in Assam and Paradeep Phosphates Ltd in Orissa. The pulp and paper companies which have been issued notices for closure are Vapi Paper Mills and Rama Pulp and Paper Ltd both in Gujarat.

 

The sugar companies which have been served notices include, Shree Bileshwar Khand Udyog in Gujarat, Dakshina Kannada and Kanpli Co-operative Sugar factory in Karnataka, Travancore Sugars & Chemicals Ltd and Co-operative Sugars Ltd in Kerala, Morena Mandal Sahakari Shakkar Karkhana, Jiwaji Rao Sugar Mill and Jaora Sugar industry in Madhya Pradesh, Jai Javan Jai Kisan Ltd, Vishwas Ltd and Shri Sant Eknath in Maharashtra, Dharani Sugars & Chemicals and Aska Co-operative Sugar & Chemicals in Orissa, Keshoraipatan Shakari Sugar Mills in Rajasthan and Pondicherry Co-operative Sugar Mills in Pondicherry.

The list also includes a dye company Amal Rasayan Ltd in Gujarat, which has been issued a closure notice.

The board had earlier called for an explanation from 168 industries for not submitting time-bound programmes for installing pollution control measures.

Of these, 142 companies responded, while 26 of them failed to respond.

Based on the response received, the board had directed 60 units to file affidavits declaring compliance and 13 units not to restart operation in case they were closed until pollution control devices were provided.

About 40 units have submitted time bound programmes for installing the requisite pollution control facilities.
