Tax Proposed To Check Vehicle Pollution In Delhi

Natures Soul, a non-government organisation, which conducted a survey on traffic on Delhi roads has suggested levying a pollution tax on vehicles in the Capital.

In its recommendations to the Delhi government, the NGO has recommended fixing of the pollution tax corresponding to the level to which each category pollutes and the engine technology they use, with vehicles causing more pollution paying more than the category that pollutes less.

Presently, there is no such tax in the country. A proposal to levy such a tax did come up earlier but did not find favour with the United Front government. The NGO feels though the tax should be levied across the country, a beginning needs to be made in Delhi, which is one of the most polluted cities in the world.

 

According to the NGO survey, an average of 64 per cent of three-wheelers, 53 per cent of two-wheelers, 59 per cent of the buses/trucks and matadors (BTM) and 17 per cent of cars pollute visibly. Individually, the two-stroke vehicles
