Ups Extends Services In Europe

BSCAL

Starting this week, our primary objective of the seamless portfolio of services throughout Europe is firmly in place, Ed Reitman, president of UPS Europe, said. The same rates and pricing structure, the same documentation and paper work will apply whether a customer is shipping within a country or to another, he added.

UPS said the transformation and simplification of its range of services in Europe was part a $1.1 billion five-year investment plan for Europe into new technology, vehicles and infrastructure, which the company announced last year.

Reitman said UPS had already spent over a billion dollars in the past in Europe. Of the $1.1 billion announced last year we have spent many millions to get to this point, he said, without specifying the exact figure.

Reitman said that in the past shippers had separate paperwork, procedures and service levels for national and intra-European deliveries and often two or more different bills.

UPS's service portfolio comprised three options - Express Plus, Express and Standard.

Express Plus, which gave delivery before 8am, had been extended to major cities across Europe. Express offered next day delivery by 10.30am to major metropolitan areas, with a new Saturday service, and Standard Service offered day-definite delivery across Europe, it said.

Reitman said UPS's five-year European investment plan included $300 million on aircraft, and $17 million would be spent this year on its main European air hub at Cologne.P>
