The Trichy Regional Engineering College-Science and Technology Entrepreneurs' Park (TREC-STEP) is contemplating setting up a hi-tech mini tool room on its premises, at an investment of Rs14.25 crore.

The proposal is meant to create an innovative platform for development of globally competitive engineering designs and products.

Besides, it would encourage young engineers to venture into small and medium enterprises and diversify their operations to manufacture products to meet the global demand, said RMP Jawahar, executive director.

TREC-STEP had forwarded the proposal to the state industries commissioner for formal approval. The tool room would also be useful to the existing small and medium industries operating in and around Trichy.

The department of science technology (DST) would also install a platform at TREC-STEP, which would enable manufacture of new products with the tool-making facility such as spark erosion, wire-cut electrode discharge machine and multiplex machine.

The platform would be created after the receipt of virtual designs at the design and innovation centre at an expenditure of Rs 98 lakh provided by the DST.

TREC-STEP would partner the Trichy District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association and BHEL Small Industries' Association who have agreed to fund 10 per cent of the cost of the mini tool room. TREC-STEP has provided 5,000 sft of built-up space and an acre on its premises for the purpose.
