A string of populist promises, including the extension of the free ration scheme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Mahadev betting app issue and the Hindutva card are among key factors that catapulted BJP to power in Chhattisgarh after five years with the saffron party crossing the 50-mark for the first time since the formation of the state in 2000.
The Congress failed to repeat its 2018 performance when it had won 68 out of 90 constituencies and had to contend with just 35 seats.
The BJP proved the exit polls, which had given a slight edge to the Congress, wrong by improving its tally from 15 seats to 54 in the 90-member assembly.
The scale of the Congress' defeat can be gauged from the fact that nine out of 13 ministers in the Bhupesh Baghel cabinet bit dust.

Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel resigned as chief minister on Sunday night after the party lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly polls.
"I respect the mandate of the people. Congress will play a positive role in the opposition," Baghel told reporters outside Raj Bhavan after submitting his resignation to Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.
He said the Congress came to power in 2018 and served the people very honestly.
Baghel said the reasons for the Congress' defeat in the elections will be known after analysis.
"The BJP has got the mandate of the people and I congratulate them," he added.

Chhattisgarh's chief minister-designate and BJP leader Vishnu Deo Sai will take oath along with his cabinet colleagues on December 13 at a ceremony in Raipur in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries, it was announced on Monday.  Besides Sai (59), who will be the BJP's first tribal CM, his council of ministers will also be sworn-in at the ceremony, an official release said.  As per constitutional norms, Chhattisgarh, which has a 90-member assembly, can have a maximum of 13 ministers, including the CM. FMCG firm Bajaj Consumer Care Ltd on Wednesday reported a 12 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 35.58 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2024.
The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 40.46 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, Bajaj Consumer Care said in a regulatory filing.
Its consolidated total revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 239.96 crore against Rs 249.42 crore in the year-ago period, it added.
The company's total expenses declined to Rs 208.08 crore in the fourth quarter from Rs 210.33 crore a year ago.
For the fiscal ended March 2024, its consolidated net profit was higher at Rs 155.43 crore compared to Rs 139.22 crore in FY23, the company said.
In FY24, the consolidated total revenue from operations stood at Rs 984.12 crore against Rs 960.87 crore in the preceding fiscal, it added.
