Why did AAP shift Sisodia to Jangpura?
This election marks a seat change for Sisodia, who previously contested from Patparganj for three consecutive terms (2013, 2015, and 2020). AAP decided to field UPSC tutor Avadh Ojha in Patparganj this time and moved Sisodia to Jangpura, a constituency where AAP has consistently won since 2013.
Jangpura was previously a Congress stronghold until AAP’s Praveen Kumar won the seat in 2015 and retained it in 2020. The party’s strategy to field Sisodia from this relatively safe seat appears to be paying off based on current trends.
The Delhi elections and legal challenges
These elections come against the backdrop of investigations into AAP’s leadership, particularly the Delhi excise policy case. Sisodia was arrested in February 2023 and spent 17 months in jail before being granted bail in August 2024. His candidacy was seen as a key test of AAP’s resilience in the face of these legal challenges.
Despite these hurdles, Sisodia campaigned actively, focusing on AAP’s key governance themes, particularly education and public welfare policies.
Delhi Assembly election trends: BJP leading overall
While Sisodia is maintaining his lead in Jangpura, the overall election trends in Delhi indicate a strong performance by the BJP, which is currently ahead in multiple seats.
- BJP leads in 45 seats (majority mark: 36)
- AAP leads in 25 seats
If the trends continue, BJP could secure a majority in the Delhi Assembly, potentially ending AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital.
