Judge blocks Trump's policy to detain migrant children in adult facilities

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a new Trump administration policy to keep migrant children in detention after they turn 18, moving quickly to stop transfers to adult facilities that advocates said were scheduled for this weekend. US District Judge Rudolph Contreras on Saturday issued a temporary restraining order to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to not detain any child who came to the country alone and without permission in ICE adult detention facilities after they become an adult. The Washington, DC, judge found that such automatic detention violates a court order he issued in 2021 barring such practices. ICE and the US Department of Homeland Security didn't immediately respond Saturday to emails seeking comment. The push to detain new adults is yet another battle over one of the most sensitive issues in President Donald Trump's hard-line immigration agenda how to treat children who cross the border unaccompanied by adults. The Associated Press reported Friday t

Trump to federalise 300 Illinois troops as judge blocks Oregon mobilisation

The Trump administration plans to federalise 300 Illinois National Guard troops, Democratic Governor JB Pritzker said Saturday, marking the latest escalation of the president's use of federal intervention in US cities. But the same day, a similar mobilisation of 200 National Guard troops in Oregon was temporarily blocked after a federal judge found President Donald Trump was likely overstepping his legal authority in responding to relatively small protests near a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland. Trump has characterised both Portland and Chicago as cities rife with crime and unrest, calling the former a war zone and suggesting apocalyptic force was needed to quell problems in the latter. Since the start of his second term, he has sent or talked about sending troops to 10 cities, including Baltimore, Maryland; Memphis, Tennessee; the District of Columbia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and the California cities of Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. But the ..

Trump's 'paper tiger' jab at Russia echoes Mao's propaganda against US

Nearly 80 years after Mao Zedong called the United States a paper tiger to boost morale at home, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are exchanging barbs who is the paper tiger of today. In a September 23 post on Truth Social, Trump mocked Russia's military powers and called the country a paper tiger, prompting the Kremlin to push back. Trump backed off, but on Tuesday he brought back the dismissive rhetoric when addressing a roomful of generals and admirals. You're four years fighting a war that should have taken a week," Trump said of Russia's war with Ukraine. "Are you a paper tiger? On Thursday, Putin retorted, We are fighting against the entire bloc of NATO, and we keep moving, keep advancing and feel confident, and we are a paper tiger; what NATO itself is? He added: A paper tiger? Go and deal with this paper tiger then. Those familiar with modern Chinese history have found it amusing, odd and not without irony that an American president should be .

PM Modi welcomes Trump's leadership as Gaza peace efforts show progress

India welcomes US President Donald Trump's leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday. Modi referred to the indications of the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas and said it marks a significant step forward in efforts to restore peace in the region. He said on X, "India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace." Trump has ordered Israel to stop bombing the Gaza Strip after Hamas said it had accepted some elements of his plan to end the nearly two-year war and return all the remaining hostages taken in the October 7, 2023, attack. Hamas said it was willing to release the hostages and hand over power to other Palestinians, but that other aspects of the plan require further consultations among Palestinians.

US appeals court rules Trump admin can't end birthright citizenship

A federal appeals court in Boston ruled on Friday that the Trump administration cannot withhold citizenship from children born to people in the country illegally or temporarily, adding to the mounting legal setbacks for the president's birthright order. A three-judge panel of the 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals became the fifth federal court since June to either issue or uphold orders blocking the president's birthright order. The court concluded that the plaintiffs are likely to succeed on their claims that the children described in the order are entitled to birthright citizenship under the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment. The panel upheld lower courts' preliminary injunctions, which blocked the birthright order while lawsuits challenging it moved ahead. The order, signed the day the president took office in January, would halt automatic citizenship for babies born to people in the US illegally or temporarily. The lessons of history' thus give us every reason to be wary of

Hamas accepts some elements of Gaza peace plan after Trump issues ultimatum

Hamas said Friday that it has accepted some elements of US President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip, including giving up power and releasing all remaining hostages, but that others require further consultations among Palestinians. The statement came hours after Trump said that Hamas must agree to the deal by Sunday evening, threatening an even greater military onslaught nearly two years into the war sparked by the October 7 attack into Israel. It was unclear how the US and Israel would respond to partial acceptance. Hamas said it was willing to release hostages according to the plan's formula, likely referring to the release of Palestinian prisoners. It also reiterated its longstanding openness to handing power over to a politically independent Palestinian body. But it said aspects of the proposal touching on the future of the Gaza Strip and Palestinian rights should be decided on the basis of a unanimous Palestinian stance reached with other factions and based

Putin praises Trump but warns US over supplies of missile to Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the United States that supplies of long-range missiles to Ukraine will seriously damage relations between Moscow and Washington but will not change the situation on the battlefield where the Russian army is making slow but steady advances. The potential supply of US Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv will signal a qualitatively new stage of escalation, including in relations between Russia and the US," Putin said at a forum of foreign policy experts in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi. The Russian leader noted that even though Tomahawk missiles will inflict damage on Russia if supplied to Ukraine, Russian air defences will quickly adapt to the new threat. It will certainly not change the balance of force on the battlefield, he added, emphasising that the Russian military is continuously making gains against Ukraine. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Putin's remarks. At the same time, Putin hailed US ...
