Delhi BJP, AAP quarrel over funding for city's G20 Summit makeover

The BJP on Sunday said Delhi's makeover for the G20 Summit has been funded by the Centre and accused the ruling AAP dispensation in the national capital of claiming credit for it. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hit back, saying that it is shocked to see that the "BJP had to pass the developmental work done by the city government as its own". Asserting that the makeover the city is witnessing is funded by the central government, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva claimed that even the wall painting concept was introduced by the Centre first in the Pragati Maidan tunnel and later in the NDMC area. Sachdeva said it is regrettable that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers "are shamelessly trying to steal credit for Delhi's makeover by making social media posts". "I challenge Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal to cite even one project of beautification or development done by his government in Delhi for G20 preparations," he added. The Delhi BJP will soon hold a press conference an

Constitution will win, SC only option: AAP on Delhi Govt amendment

Constitution is supreme, however, when a government tries to subvert it by bringing amendments to it, Supreme Court is the only option, Aam Aadmi Party leader Imran Hussain said here on Saturday. Hussain, a minister in the AAP-governed Delhi government, made the remarks responding to a question on the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, during a press conference. "This issue is in the court of law and Enforcement Directorate and CBI is being wrongly used by the BJP. In Maharashtra, they accused someone and sometime later the person joined BJP. This is not how things work out. If public gives authority, it also have the power to seize it back. "When parties do not obey the Constitution and bring out new amendment bills then the only option is the Supreme Court. And, I think, the Constitution will win and no one is above the Constitution," he said. Asked about AAP national chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar's comment that if Congress does not joi

SC grants Delhi govt more time to finalise bike-taxi aggregator scheme

The Supreme Court on Monday extended till September 30 the time granted to the AAP government to finalise the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme to regulate bike-taxi aggregators in the national capital. A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi allowed the plea moved by the Delhi government seeking extension of time. The application is allowed and extension of time for issuing notification on Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, 2023 is extended till September 30, 2023, the bench said. During the hearing, the bench asked the counsel appearing for the Delhi government about the reason of delay in finalising the policy. The counsel told the top court that a robust policy is underway but it will take some more time. The apex court on June 12 had stayed the high court order that essentially allowed bike-taxi aggregators Rapido and Uber to operate in the national capital by asking the Delhi government not to

AAP questions Centre over discrepancies in Ayushman Bharat data by CAG

Questioning the Centre over the discrepancies in the database of the Ayushman Bharat scheme by the Comptroller and Auditor General, the AAP on Friday asked whether the government will initiate any probe into it. "The CAG report has highlighted irregularities. I want to ask whether a probe will be ordered in this," she said. "The health scheme of Delhi government that has no restrictions should be implemented across the country," she added. Ineligible households were found registered as PMJAY beneficiaries and had availed the benefits ranging between Rs 0.12 lakh to Rs 22.44 crore under the scheme,

Atishi to hold charge of services, vigilance; file sent for L-G's approval

Delhi Minister Atishi will be given additional charge of the services and the vigilance departments, a government source said, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal forwarding a proposal to L-G VK Saxena for approval. The move comes a day after the Delhi services bill secured parliamentary approval after the Rajya Sabha passed the measure that will give the Centre control over the bureaucracy in the national capital. The two portfolios were earlier held by Atishi's Cabinet colleague Saurabh Bharadwaj. Atishi was given additional charge of the revenue, planning and the finance departments in June after Saxena approved a proposal to rejig the Cabinet. These three departments were earlier with Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot. Atishi -- the only woman minister in the Delhi Cabinet -- will now hold 14 portfolios, the highest among all ministers in the city government.

Delhi Services Bill passed, another round of tussle between AAP, L-G likely

The Delhi services bill, passed in Rajya Sabha on Monday, is likely to set the stage for another round of confrontation between the AAP dispensation and the Lt Governor, even as the legislation puts the seal on the Centre's primacy on the control of the city government's bureaucracy. The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed with the Upper House of Parliament approving it with 131 votes in favour and 102 against. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the contentious bill in the House and said that the proposed legislation is aimed at providing effective and corruption-free governance in the national capital. The bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last week, replaces an ordinance promulgated by the Centre for handling the transfers and postings of officials in the Delhi government. However, the matter is still hanging fire as the Supreme Court last month formed a constitution bench to examine the power of Parliament over governa

Three prominent AAP leaders, many workers in Jammu resign from party

Three AAP leaders, including a District Development Council (DDC) member, along with many workers here resigned from the party. DDC member Taranjit Singh Tony, Yash Pal Kundal and the AAP's Jammu women wing president Namrata Sharma wrote separately to Kejriwal informing him about their decision to quit the party. "Eight months have passed but the party office in Jammu has not opened even once. We feel sidelined in the party and thus decided to say goodbye to it after making several failed attempts to reach out to the leadership," Tony told reporters here. He said they joined the AAP in Delhi last year after being influenced by its programmes and manifesto, besides seeing its rule in Delhi and Punjab. "After the change of leadership in Jammu and Kashmir, the party has lost its track," Tony said.
