Singhvi slams govt over consensus for secular civil code, says 'jumlebazi'

Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for a secular civil code as 'jumlebazi', senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi says attempts are being made to ram such concepts down the throat of the people for political purposes, often ahead of polls. Singhvi, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Telangana last week, said there is nothing wrong with concepts if they are acted upon through consensus. "You cannot from the ramparts of Red Fort talk of X Y Z and not take your allies on board before that. Today I am not debating merits but 'One Nation One Election', can you do it without some degree of very high level of consultation. What is the point of saying that 'I am going to have a Uniform Civil Code' but you call it a secular civil code because you know you cannot do it uniformly," the eminent jurist told PTI. "Is it ever contemplated that Uttarakhand will have a UCC but if you step out of a car in Uttar Pradesh, there is no UCC... Is it Uniform Civil Code or is it ..

Tharoor slams govt for not giving Oppn chairpersonship of key parl panels

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday hit out at the government over its "reluctance" to give the opposition chairpersonship of important parliamentary committees, and said it only reflects its growing insecurity, rather than any accumulation of wisdom or confidence after 10 years. The remarks by the four-time Thiruvananthapuram MP came over a media report which said the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees have not been constituted because of disagreements between the government and Opposition, on control of these panels. In a post on X, Tharoor said it is disappointing that the government appears to have no idea of the purpose of Parliamentary committees, which are to provide an additional layer of scrutiny and accountability for the government without the political grandstanding often associated with publicly-televised sessions of Parliament itself. "To attempt to deny opposition parties any say in matters of national importance and sensitivity, is to .

Will PM Modi hijack another Cong guarantee and conduct caste census: Jairam

A day after the RSS' comments on caste census, the Congress on Tuesday wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would "hijack" another of its guarantee and conduct the caste census now with the Sangh having "given the green signal". The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday said it has no objection to collecting data on specific communities or castes, provided that the information is used for their welfare and not exploited as a political tool for electoral gains. Reacting to the remarks, Congress' general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said RSS's preaching on caste census raises some basic questions such as - does it have a veto power over caste census. "Who is the RSS to give permission for caste census? What does the RSS mean when it says caste census should not be misused for electioneering? Is it to be a judge or umpire?" Ramesh said in a post in Hindi on X. Why has RSS maintained a "mysterious silence" on the need for a constitutional amendment to

Prime Minister Modi is visiting Brunei on September 3-4 at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all existing sectors. The situation in Manipur continues to be very tense, despite claims to the contrary being made by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, he said. "Today is exactly 16 months since the eruption o

MVA creating wedge over statue collapse ahead of Maha polls: Narayan Rane

BJP leader and former Union minister Narayan Rane on Monday accused the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi of creating a wedge in Maharashtra over the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue ahead of the state assembly polls. The statue of the 17th century Maratha warrior king at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil fell on August 26, over eight months after it was unveiled by PM Modi on the occasion of Navy Day. Rane, a former chief minister, also accused Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut of inciting tensions over the issue. Dubbing the incident as unfortunate, Rane said, "The three parties (Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP)) are working to create a wedge in the state over the collapse of the statue ahead of the state polls." The MVA had held a protest march from Hutatma Chowk to Gateway of India on Sunday to protest the episode. Opposition leaders who took part in the march slammed the Union and state governments over the statue crash, with Thackeray dismissing Modi's apology .

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a swipe at opposition parties, saying many of them are examples of what happens when political organisations do not follow internal democracy. Athawale's party to contest 8-10 seats in Haryana if no agreement with BJP

Union minister Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (Athawale) plans to fight the Haryana assembly polls on 8-10 seats and support ally BJP on the remaining, party leaders said here on Monday. However, if an agreement is reached with the BJP, the RPA (A) will contest just two seats and leave the rest for the senior NDA partner, the party's Haryana unit president Ravi Sonu Kundli said here. "Discussions are ongoing with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding seat allocation. If no agreement is reached with the BJP, the Republican Party will field candidates on 8 to 10 seats and support BJP candidates on the remaining 80 seats," Kundli said. He said the RPI (A) has emerged as a prominent party for Dalits in the country, and it would gain traction in Haryana, which goes to polls on October 5. "The RPI(A) has emerged as a party of the weaker sections across the country including Haryana. We are confident of a good performance," Kundli said. The RPI(A), which is a part of t

AAP shouldn't celebrate Vijay, Bibhav's bail, they will be convicted: BJP

The AAP should not celebrate Vijay Nair and Bibhav Kumar's bail as they have to stand trial and will "surely face conviction", Delhi BJP spokesperson Amit Tiwari said on Monday. Earlier in the Day, the Supreme Court granted bail to former AAP communication in-charge Nair in a money laundering case related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. Nair spent nearly 23 months in jail in the case. The top court also granted bail to Kumar, the aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in the Swati Maliwal assault case noting that he has been in custody for over 100 days. Delhi BJP spokesperson Tiwari said the bail to Nair and Kumar is just a part of the judicial process and has nothing to do with the merits of the case. Under the judicial process every arrested person is eligible to get bail if a court is satisfied that the accused cannot influence the witness or the facts of the case, he said. The AAP leaders should not celebrate the bail granted to Nair and Kumar as they

The Congress on Monday levelled fresh conflict of interest allegations against SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Buch and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come clean as the head of the appointments committee of the cabinet on her appointment. The opposition party said the Supreme Court should take cognisance of these fresh revelations and demanded that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chairperson should be dismissed immediately. At a press conference, the Congress alleged that since the current SEBI chairperson took office in 2017, she has not only been drawing a salary from SEBI but has also been holding an office of profit at the ICICI Bank, continuing to receive income from them to this very day. There was no immediate response from Buch or the ICICI bank on the allegations. Had shown displeasure over Kangana's remarks on farmers' protests: Grewal

Senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal has said that he had immediately spoken to his party high command after Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut's remarks on the farmers' protests and expressed his displeasure. Grewal said that he had spoken over phone to Union Minister and BJP president J P Nadda in this regard. Kangana, the MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, had recently posted a clip of her interview with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar in which she suggested that a "Bangladesh-like situation" could have erupted in India but for the country's strong leadership. She then alleged that bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place during the farmers' protests against the now-repealed three farm laws. "The first thing is that just by becoming a MP, one does not become a leader...connecting with (party's) ideology does not happen in one day. I have been with the BJP for more than 35 years," Grewal told reporters here on Sunday. "When she said (made the remarks), I immediately reacted and .
