Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has demanded that the cut off time to register for the Maharashtra government's Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana be waived off to enable all eligible women to avail financial assistance. The August 31 cut off date should be scrapped and the scheme should be implemented as a social security right, Chavan said in a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Due to technical glitches, the server of the official portal is non functional most of the time, while in several instances women do not get the registration OTP for nearly six hours, he said. Women are worried they will not be able to register themselves for the scheme in time, Chavan said in the letter. He said the registration limit was July 15 earlier and this was extended to August 31 after he made such a demand during the monsoon session, adding the age limit was increased from 60 to 65 years following his initiative.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said a large number refugees were denied citizenship rights in the country due to the appeasement policy of past governments led by the Congress and its allies. Addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad after handing over citizenship certificates to 188 Hindu refugees in Gujarat, Shah said the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is about giving rights and justice to lakhs of refugees. He also assured Muslims that there is no provision in the CAA to take away anyone's citizenship, as it is about granting citizenship. The past governments allowed crores of intruders into the country and made them citizens illegally, he said. At the same time, they denied citizenship to those who followed the law and applied for the same by saying there was no legal provision for it, Shah said. "Because of the policy of appeasement of past governments run by the Congress and its allies, those who came to the country for refuge did not get rights and justice," the minis
Following a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has vowed to win all 10 assembly seats, where by-elections are to be held, underlining its dominance in the state and sending a message to the Opposition that its recent resurgence was short-lived. Political observers, however, say it could be an uphill task for the ruling NDA alliance. Bypolls are to be held on 10 seats that fell vacant after nine MLAs were elected as MPs in this year's Lok Sabha elections and the MLA of Sishamau was convicted and given a seven-year jail sentence. However, the dates for the polls have not been announced yet. "Let us all pledge that we will achieve 100 per cent victory in the upcoming by-elections on 10 assembly seats," BJP's UP unit president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary exhorted party workers at the party's state working committee meeting held on July 14. Since then the BJP organisation has been making extensive preparations for all 10 seats, including at the booth level, with ministers and par

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday dubbed as 'low level conspiracy' of the BJP, the permission granted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the MUDA alternative site scam. He said the Chief Minister will emerge stronger after this move. "The CM has emerged stronger. The more you go after him, he will grow stronger," he told reporters here. The Minister said the BJP will be humiliated for conspiring to finish off Siddaramaiah politically as it will have repercussions. "The unethical and low level political conspiracy of the BJP is now proven," Rao said. According to him, the BJP's Padayatra from Bengaluru to Mysuru seeking Siddaramaiah's resignation for his alleged role in MUDA scam was a flop show while the Congress' public meetings evoked tremendous public response. "The more you target him, he will grow tall, he will become popular and people will stand behind him. He is doing a good job by serving people," Rao said.

Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara on Saturday decried that the Governor's office has been 'misused' after Thaawarchand Gehlot granted sanction to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with alternative site scam in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority. He claimed that there was pressure from the top on Governor Gehlot, which is now proved. In the MUDA 'scam', it is alleged that compensatory sites were allotted to Siddaramaiah's wife Parvathi in an upmarket area in Mysuru, which had higher property value as compared to the location of her land which had been "acquired" by the MUDA. The opposition cried foul and three activists lodged a complaint with Gehlot, accusing the CM of 'misusing' his position. Siddaramaiah has rejected the allegations and asserted that his wife deserved a fair compensation. Addressing reporters here, Parameshwara said, "It is clear that there is pressure from the top.
