CPI(M), Cong hold talks on Tripura bypolls to avoid split in anti-BJP votes

Leaders of the opposition Tipra Motha, CPI(M) and Congress on Saturday met to strategise for the by-election to the two assembly seats in Tripura, in which they are looking to avoid a split of the anti-BJP votes. By-elections will be held in the Dhanpur and Boxanagar seats in Sepahijala district on September 5. Following the meeting, leader of opposition Animesh Debbarma of the Tipra Motha said a preliminary discussion was held on the bypolls. "Today, we held a preliminary discussion with CPI(M) and Congress on the upcoming by-elections. Our main intention is to avoid a split of anti-BJP votes," he told reporters. Debbarma said the result of the assembly election, held in February, was not as per their expectations even as the BJP secured less than 40 per cent votes. "We don't want to repeat the same in the by-elections. I have heard the views of both CPI(M) and Congress, and will place them before our leadership for taking a final call on it," he said. "The Tipra Motha wants to

Rahul Gandhi steps up attack on PM Modi over raging Manipur violence

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of not addressing the problem of Manipur even during the debate on the violence in the northerneastern state in Parliament a few days ago. Gandhi was addressing a meeting organised by the opposition Congress-led UDF alliance in Kalpetta here to welcome him on his first visit to Wayanad after his Lok Sabha membership was restored. "He (Modi) spoke for 2 hrs 13 minutes. He laughed... he joked... he smiled... his cabinet laughed, joked and smiled... They had a lot of fun. The Prime Minister spoke two hours about everything... Congress, me about INDIA alliance but spoke two minutes about Manipur," Gandhi said. Lashing out at Modi, Gandhi said the BJP and the government led by it "murdered the idea of India" in Manipur. "You have destroyed thousands of families. You have allowed the rape of thousands of women. You have allowed the murder of thousands of people. And as Prime

BJP warns Priyanka of legal action over post alleging corruption in MP

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh has warned of legal action against Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her social media post, in which she accused the saffron party-led government in the state of indulging in corruption. Terming her allegation false, MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra sought proof from the Congress leader to support her charge, warning that options were otherwise open before the state government and the BJP for legal action. While Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the opposition party was spreading lies on social media, state Congress chief Kamal Nath claimed there are thousands of corruption cases. State BJP chief V D Sharma also warned of legal action against Priyanka Gandhi, accusing her of citing a fake letter in a social media post to level the allegation. The state Congress, however, said it would prove that the BJP-led government is corrupt and also accused the ruling party of creating political terror. On Friday,

'BJP Bharat Chodo' slogan reverberating across country: Mamata Banerjee

Accusing the Centre of not acting against perpetrators of atrocities in Manipur, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday asserted that the slogan of 'BJP Bharat Chodo' (BJP Quit India) is reverberating across the country. She also said that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi can't speak on corruption" as his government was facing allegations of graft "in PM Care funds, Rafale deal and demonetisation". Her comments came hours after Modi, while virtually addressing the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meet here, said India has a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption. Modi accused the opposition parties of "running away" from the Lok Sabha during a debate on the no-confidence motion, and said his government has countered the "negativity being spread" by them across the country. In response, the feisty TMC supremo said the PM was "blaming the opposition without any evidence as the BJP doesn't want the country's poor people to survive". "The prime minister is mislead

Does Rahul Gandhi expect armed forces to fire on Indians in Manipur: BJP

The BJP on Saturday asked Rahul Gandhi if he expected the armed forces to resort to shooting at Indians in violence-hit Manipur and claimed the Congress leader does not have any trace of democracy in his mind. Noting that Gandhi had claimed that armed forces can restore peace in the state within days if allowed, BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad wondered if he wanted what his grandmother and then prime minister Indira Gandhi had done by ordering the Air Force to drop bombs in Aizawl in the 1960s. The Congress has said the Air Force was then used to target armed militant groups. Prasad asked, "Does Rahul Gandhi expect armed forces to fire upon Indians in Manipur? Or should they spread harmony and work to unite Indians." He noted that there is a lot of tension in the state between two groups and accused Gandhi of delivering an inciting speech in Parliament. Though some of his controversial references were expunged in Lok Sabha, Gandhi reiterated his allegation

'BJP goons. not TMC workers indulged in violence during WB rural polls'

West Bengal minister Shashi Panja on Saturday alleged that BJP "goons", and not Trinamool Congress workers as claimed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had indulged in violence during rural elections held in July. The PM, while virtually addressing the BJP's Panchayati Raj Parishad in West Bengal on Friday, criticised the ruling party in the state for using "terror and threats" to intimidate the opposition during the rural polls. "Is it because the BJP could not win the panchayat polls that terror and intimidation are being alleged? It is the BJP which indulged in violence in West Bengal," Panja said, seeking to counter the PM's accusations against the Mamata Banerjee dispensation. Asserting that Modi's accusations against the TMC government were untrue, Panja accused the BJP government at the Centre of depriving West Bengal of its financial dues under various schemes. "He does not have the time to visit Manipur, but does find time to address party workers in West Bengal," Panja ...

2-hour-long speech filled with irrelevant talk: Priyanka's dig at PM Modi

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his reply to the no-confidence debate in Lok Sabha, saying that he should have talked about peace efforts in Manipur but his over two-hour-long speech was filled with jokes, sarcasm and irrelevant talk. In his over 130-minute reply in Lok Sabha to the no-confidence brought by opposition parties, Modi on Thursday slammed the opposition alliance INDIA as a collection of arrogant dynasties who will take India back by two centuries as he exuded confidence that people will bless 'garib ka beta' with a record-breaking mandate in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Several opposition parties, including the Congress, had walked out by the time Modi touched on the Manipur issue, accusing him of not speaking on the matter. "According to the dignity of his post, it does not suit the Prime Minister to laugh-mock over a serious and sensitive issue like Manipur," Priyanka Gandhi said on X, formerly known as ...
