Cong fuelled water disputes between states, did little for farmers: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit out at the Congress, saying they talk big in the name of farmers but neither do anything for them nor let others do it. The delay in the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) is a direct proof of the intention of the Congress, he said. "The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) was delayed for so long by the Congress, this is also a direct proof of the Congress' intentions. They talk big in the name of farmers but neither do they do anything for the farmers themselves nor do they let others do it," he said addressing a public meeting in Dadiya in Jaipur. He was addressing 'the Ek Varsh-Parinaam Utkarsh' to mark completion of one-year of Rajasthan government during which he inaugurated and laid foundation stone for 24 projects related to energy, road, railways and water worth over Rs 46,400 crore. Willing to resign, high command will take call: Maharashtra Cong chief

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Tuesday said that he has expressed his willingness to resign from the post, and now the party high command will decide on it. Talking to reporters on Vidhan Bhavan premises, Patole said the Congress's group leader in the state legislature will be chosen today. Following the party's worst-ever defeat in the assembly elections in Maharashtra, party sources had earlier claimed that the senior Congress leader had requested the central leadership to relieve him of the responsibility of the organisational post. Patole, however, had clarified last week that he had not tendered resignation and rumours were being spread. Patole said the Congress's Maharashtra in-charge will arrive in the city on Tuesday evening, and the party's group leader in the state legislature will be elected. He said discussions about the state chief's post would also take place. Queried whether he has tendered his resignation from the state chief's post, Patole said, "I have

BJP likely to get new President by February end to replace JP Nadda

The new BJP president, who will succeed incumbent J P Nadda, is likely to be elected by the end of February, according to a senior party functionary. Party sources said the ongoing organisational election is on track to complete the polling process in more than half of its state units by mid-January, an exercise that will unveil the process of electing its new national president. A senior leader said the tenure of nearly 60 per cent of the BJP's state unit presidents is over, and their replacements are likely to be in place by the middle of the next month. The BJP's constitution stipulates that organisational polls should be completed in at least half of its state units before the process to elect the national president is started. "We expect that a new BJP president will assume the charge by the end of February," the functionary said. Asked whether the new BJP president may be someone who is currently serving as a Union minister, he said it could be either from the government or

Opposition slams govt over slow growth, high inflation, job crisis

Opposition members on Monday flagged the low economic growth rate of 5.4 per cent in the second quarter of current fiscal and sought to know from the Finance Minister what steps the government is taking to boost growth, control inflation and create jobs. Participating in the debate on Supplementary Demands for Grants in the Lok Sabha, TMC member Sougata Ray said the government is caught in "pincer movement" of whether to push growth or control inflation and the economy is not in a "fair shape". "There is a typical crisis in the economy. The crisis is our growth projection for Q2 slipped to 5.4 per cent. This is very damaging to the economy and there is a sharp slowdown in the manufacturing sector," Ray said. He also alleged that former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had to leave the Reserve Bank because he did not heed to the demand of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to cut interest rate. Instead, Das decided to focus on containing inflation. "There was a dispute between the Fina

Waqf issue: BJP seeks CBI inquiry into bribery charge against Vijayendra

The BJP on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into the allegations made by Minister Priyank Kharge of Rs 150 crore "bribe" offer by party chief B Y Vijayendra to former Minority Commission chairperson Anwar Manippadi. As the Assembly proceedings started, the BJP members raised objections over Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Kharge's accusation in the House last Thursday. Kharge had alleged that Vijayendra, who is also the Shikaripura BJL MLA, offered Rs 150 crore to Manippadi, a BJP member, not to raise the Waqf land issue. As Karnataka Minority Commission Chairperson during the previous BJP government in the state, Manippadi had submitted a detailed report on the encroachment of Waqf land in the state and the involvement of bigwigs in it. "The minister had made an allegation in the House in my absence, which was uncalled for. The same was repeated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. This was a baseless allegation," Vijayendra said. He challenged the chief minister to order a

Cong 'anti-women', amended Constitution to help family: Sitharaman in RS

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the Congress party carried out major amendments to the Constitution to brazenly help the "family" and the "dynasty". She also termed the Congress party as "anti-women" for not passing the Women's Reservation Bill under pressure of its coalition partners. Initiating the discussion on the 'Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India' in the Rajya Sabha, the senior BJP leader said the economic policies of the previous Congress governments for about 50 years did not strengthen the Indian economy. "Each time the Congress brazenly (amended Constitution)... only to help the family, the dynasty... kept amending the Constitution," she said. Citing various amendments, including the 42nd Constitutional Amendment and one related to the Shah Bano case, the Finance Minister said none of the amendments passed the test of four criteria -- economic good, social intent, due process, and constitutional spirit. She said the amendments w

No room for factional politics in party: Karnataka BJP chief Vijayendra

Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra on Sunday said there is no room for factional politics in the party, and organising meetings was unacceptable. He urged party leaders holding any such meetings and conferences to immediately stop their activities. Pointing out at the media reports about preparations for a show of strength event being organised by a section of party leaders in his favour, Vijayendra said, "There are no factions in the BJP and everyone in the organisation is a staunch party worker." "I urge all our former legislators and party leaders who have gathered in Davangere that already our conducts have created a lot of confusion among party workers and supporters in the state. By organising such events no one should give room for more confusion," he told reporters here. "I'm making it clear that no such convention or event is before us. AAP unveils final Delhi poll list; Kejriwal criticises BJP for 'no CM face'

After AAP released its final list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls in Delhi, party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, who will contest from the New Delhi constituency, took a swipe at the BJP, alleging that the saffron party has no chief ministerial face. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday released its final list of 38 candidates for the Assembly polls due in February, fielding Kejriwal from New Delhi besides repeating Chief Minister Atishi from Kalkaji. In a post on X in Hindi, Kejriwal said, "The party is contesting the elections with full confidence and full preparation. BJP is missing. They have no CM face, no team, no planning, and no vision for Delhi. They have only one slogan, only one policy, and only one mission -- 'Remove Kejriwal'. Ask them what they did in five years, and they reply, 'Kejriwal ko bahut gaali di' (cursed Kejriwal a lot)." The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is yet to announce its candidates, is reportedly planning to pitch Parvesh Verma, son of ..

Atishi accuses Centre of settling Rohingyas in Delhi; Puri denies claim

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday, accusing the BJP-led Centre of settling "a large number of illegal Rohingyas" in different parts of the city. With the AAP targeting Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri over his tweets and claiming that settling these refugees here was a "conscious decision" of the BJP-led NDA government, the minister accused AAP of indulging in "politics of diversion, false narratives and half-truths". In the run-up to the Delhi Assembly polls due in February 2025, the ruling AAP and BJP have been hitting out at one another over the issue of illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi people staying in the national capital. The BJP has already complained to the Election Commission about illegal Rohingyas and Bangladeshis registered as voters in Delhi "at the behest of AAP". Citing two tweets by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in 2022, Atishi alleged the Union government has settled a large number of illegal Rohingya refugees in ...

BJP completes 1st year in office in Rajasthan, list several achievements

The BJP government in Rajasthan, led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, completed one year in office on Sunday with a number of accomplishments, including the creation of more than 1.24 lakh jobs, a crackdown on the paper-leak mafia and signing an MoU regarding the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project. The government organised an investment summit in its first year and signed memoranda of understanding worth Rs 34 lakh crore, a step towards realising its vision of increasing the economy size of the desert state to USD 350 billion, for which the ruling regime has effected a 65-per cent increase in capital expenditure in this year's budget. Winning five of the seven seats in the recently-held Assembly bypolls is also being credited to the efficiency of Sharma's leadership. However, the palpable discord of Agriculture Minister Kirodi Lal Meena, indecisiveness on issues, such as the formation of new districts by the former Congress government, the controversial sub-inspector recruitment of

BJP not discussing issues during legislature session: D K Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the opposition BJP, accusing it of indulging in "politics" and not showing any interest in discussing issues concerning the state and its people, during the ongoing winter session of legislature in Belagavi. He claimed that the saffron party in the state was a divided house, and hence they were not interested on discussing real issues. "BJP is not interested in any discussion, what to do?....they are not interested in anything else other than doing politics. There is no unity among them, so they are doing such things," Shivakumar told reporters here in response to a question about issues relating to north Karnataka not being discussed in the legislature session so far. The session that began on December 9 will continue during the coming week too. Belagavi, bordering Maharashtra, has been hosting legislature sessions once a year since 2006.
