Canada inquiry finds no 'traitors' in Parl, warns against disinformation

A public inquiry on foreign interference in Canada concluded Tuesday that while some foreign entities tried to interfere in the country's elections, its democratic institutions remain "robust, but warned against the danger of misinformation. The final report of the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference found no evidence of traitors in the country's parliament, but Commissioner Marie-Jose Hogue warned that one of the biggest threats to democracy was foreign actors sowing disinformation in both the traditional media and social media. Distinguishing what is false is becoming increasingly difficult and the consequences are extraordinarily harmful, Hogue told a news conference in Ottawa where she did not take questions. The Canadian government established the public inquiry in September 2023 to investigate whether China, Russia and other countries interfered in Canadian federal elections in 2019 and 2021 that re-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberals. The final report ...

MEA rejects Canadian Commission's insinuations on interference in elections

India on Tuesday night strongly rejected "insinuations" made against it in a report by a Canadian commission that investigated allegations that certain foreign governments were meddling into Canada's elections. In a strong reaction, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it rejects the report's "insinuations" on India. It is in fact Canada which has been "consistently interfering" in India's internal affairs, it said. "We have seen a report about alleged activities on purported interference. It is in fact Canada which has been consistently interfering in India's internal affairs," the MEA said. "This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organised criminal activities," it said in a statement. "We reject the report's insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced," it added. The government of India was suspected of using proxy agents to provide "clandestine financial support" to candidat

Canada's Freeland hopeful, lays out plan to fight Trump's tariff threats

Chrystia Freeland, the former finance minister who is running to replace Justin Trudeau as Canada's prime minister, said Monday Canada needs to release a retaliation list of goods the country would target if US President Donald Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods. A list of products worth 200 billion Canadian dollars (USD 139 billion) would send a message to US exporters about the harm tariffs would cause them, Freeland said in a statement. Being smart means retaliating where it hurts, she said. Our counterpunch must be dollar-for-dollar and it must be precisely and painfully targeted: Florida orange growers, Wisconsin dairy farmers, Michigan dishwasher manufacturers, and much more." Now is the moment when Canada must make clear to Americans the specific costs that will accompany any tariff measures by the Trump administration. Trump has said he will use economic coercion to pressure Canada to become the nation's 51st state. He continues to

Americans will pay more if Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, says Trudeau

Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday American consumers will pay more whenever President Donald Trump decides to apply sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday that he still plans to tariff Canada and Mexico at 25% rates starting as soon as Feb. 1. Trump previously threatened to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he took office but the tariffs weren't applied on day one. Trudeau said if Trump does go forward "whether it be back on Jan. 20th, on Feb. 1st or Feb. 15th as a Valentines Day present, or on April 1st or whenever Canada will respond with retaliatory tariffs and "prices for American consumers on just about everything will go up." We don't think he wants that, Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa. By targeting America's second largest trading partner after Mexico, Trump risks upending the markets for autos, lumber and oil all of which could carry over quickly to consumers. T

Amazon to close 7 warehouses in Quebec, end 1,700 jobs in next 2 months

Online retailer Amazon said on Wednesday that it's closing all seven of its warehouses in the Canadian province of Quebec in the next two months. The e-commerce giant said the move would provide "even more savings to our customers over the long run". However, a Canadian union that successfully unionised one warehouse accused the company of closing its sites to fend off organising efforts in the region. The closures will eliminate about 1,700 permanent full-time jobs in the greater Montreal area, Amazon said. The warehouses also employ 250 temporary employees. Amazon said it would enlist local, third-party companies to deliver packages, reverting to a business model it used in Quebec before 2020. "This decision wasn't made lightly, and we're offering impacted employees a package that includes up to 14 weeks' pay after facilities close and transitional benefits, like job placement resources," Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait said in a statement. Agrait said the decision was made

Ready to respond if Trump imposes sweeping tariffs on Feb 1, says Canada

Canadian leaders expressed relief Monday that broad tariffs were not applied to Canadian products on the first day of Donald Trump's presidency, but Trump later said he could impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canada and Mexico on February 1. Trump has been threatening to impose sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico and other trading partners. An incoming White House official who insisted on anonymity pointed reporters on Monday morning to a Wall Street Journal story saying Trump will only sign a memorandum telling federal agencies to study trade issues. Still, Trump pledged in his inaugural address that tariffs would be coming and said foreign countries would be paying the trade penalties, even though those taxes are currently paid by domestic importers and often passed along to consumers. We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada, Trump said Monday night in the Oval Office. I think February 1st." Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc earlier said reprieve is too strong of a

India drops to 3rd in trust index; low-income less trusting of institutions

India has slipped one place to third slot when it comes to people's trust in the government, businesses, media and NGOs, while the low-income population is far less trusting than their richer counterparts, a study showed here on Monday. The annual Edelman Trust Barometer, now in its 25th year, released before the start of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, also showed that India ranks low at 13th place when it comes to trust of people in other countries, in companies with Indian headquarters. Canada topped this list of foreign-headquartered companies, followed by Japan, Germany, the UK, France and the US, while those ranked higher than India also included Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, China and Brazil. The overall list for trust of the general population in the government, businesses, media and NGOs was again topped by China, while Indonesia replaced India for the second spot by virtue of an increased score despite the Indian score remaining unchanged. The survey of 28
