Coal demand set for uptick on rising power needs: Industry expert

The country's coal demand, which had remained weak earlier in the current financial year, is poised for a boost in the coming days on the back of a sharp turnaround in electricity consumption, an industry expert said on Sunday. Vinaya Varma, Managing Director of mjunction services ltd -- a B2B e-commerce platform and joint venture of SAIL and Tata Steel -- said after successive months of negative growth in October and November, power demand staged a strong recovery in December with a 6.3 per cent growth. "The tempo has been maintained with power consumption continuing to rise in January as well, due to a harsh winter and general improvement in economic activities," Varma said. "This, we believe, will boost coal demand in the coming days," he added. The country's coal sector, after hitting a record one-billion-tonne production milestone, is staring at a surprise demand slowdown, forcing major public firms and new commercial miners to rethink expansion plans amid rising ...

Coal mining resumes at CCL's Rajhara colliery in Jharkhand after 16 years

Union minister Satish Chandra Dubey on Saturday inaugurated the resumption of coal mining operations at Rajhara Colliery of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) in Jharkhand's Palamu district. Coal mining operations had been closed at the site since 2010. Dubey said, "India is progressing significantly in the coal sector. The CCL project holds great importance for the region. The resumption of operations will not only generate employment but also contribute to the overall development of the area." He said that this would also help curb migration from the region. There has been a long-standing demand to restart the Rajhara coal mine, and the government has accorded it high priority, the minister said. He further said that mining at Rajhara Colliery had been halted since 2010 due to unavoidable reasons. BJP MP from Palamu said that efforts had been made at multiple levels to restart the mine and that success had finally been achieved. The Rajhara Colliery area holds 4.5 million tonnes

From the market listings of two subsidiaries of state-owned CIL to a surge in funding for ambitious coal gasification projects, the coal sector braces for a whirlwind of activities in 2026 that could redefine energy security amid the global push for cleaner fuels.
