Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury demands discussion on internal security in LS

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday demanded a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the country's internal security situation. Speaking in the House, Chowdhury alleged that the security situation from Kashmir to Punjab has worsened and the number of terror camps has increased in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 377. "The law and order is worsening in the country so there should be a discussion (in the House) on internal security situation," Chowdhury said. Speaking during the Zero Hour, Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Shiromani Akali Dal) demanded that government consult farmers before proceeding with the amendments in the Electricity (amendment) Bill, 2022. She said the Government had given written assurances to the farmers following which they withdrew their year-long agitation in December 2021. Himachal's next CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, a fighter who rose through ranks

A product of student politics, senior Congress leader and four-time MLA Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu was a known detractor of party veteran Virbhadra Singh who had dominated the Himachal Pradesh politics for over five decades until his demise last year. With the party bagging its first victory in the hill state without the charismatic presence of Virbhadra Singh, Sukhu's elevation makes it clear that the party is ready to move on. More so, as the party did not give in to the strong claim to the post mounted by Pratibha Singh, the party's state unit chief and wife of Virbhadra Singh. Son of a road transport corporation driver, Sukhu, 58, had a modest beginning and used to run a milk counter at Chhota Shimla in his early days. Rising through the ranks, Sukhu was a relentless fighter and remained the party's state unit president for a record six years from 2013 to 2019 despite being frequently at loggerheads with Virbhadra Singh, a six-time chief minister. The old rivalry came to the fore .

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu likely to be next Himachal CM, say Congress sources

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu who headed the Congress campaign committee in Himachal Pradesh is likely to be the next chief minister, party sources said on Saturday. The sources said the party high command has cleared the name of Sukhu, the MLA from Nadaun, for the top job. He is likely to be elected as the Congress Legislature Party leader at a meeting of newly elected party MLAs in Shimla Saturday evening. The new chief minister is likely to take oath Sunday, the sources said. In their meeting Friday evening, the MLAs had unanimously passed a resolution authorising the party president to pick the legislature party leader, who will be the next chief minister. Intense lobbying witnessed within Congress for Himachal Pradesh CM's post

Intense lobbying continued for the chief minister's post on Saturday, a day after the newly elected Congress MLAs unanimously passed a resolution authorising the party president to pick the legislature party leader. From the morning itself, Congress MLAs made a beeline to Cecil Hotel in Shimla where the party's central observers -- Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda -- were staying. Even after winning the assembly polls with a clear mandate, the Congress is finding it difficult to fill the void created by the death of six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh and reach a consensus on the legislature party leader who will become the CM. Several leaders including state Congress Chief Pratibha Singh, leader of the opposition in the outgoing Assembly Mukesh Agnihotri and head of the election campaign committee Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who are believed to be the frontrunners for the top post, met the observers ...

Peru's ex-president Pedro Castillo faced bigotry for impoverished past

When Pedro Castillo won Peru's presidency last year, it was celebrated as a victory by the country's poor the peasants and Indigenous people who live deep in the Andes and whose struggles had long been ignored. His supporters hoped Castillo, a populist outsider of humble roots, would redress their plight or at least end their invisibility. But during 17 months in office before being ousted and detained on Wednesday, supporters instead saw Castillo face the racism and discrimination they often experience. He was mocked for wearing a traditional hat and poncho, ridiculed for his accent and criticised for incorporating Indigenous ceremonies into official events. Protests against Castillo's government featured a donkey a symbol of ignorance in Latin America with a hat similar to his. The attacks were endless, so much so that observers from the Organisation of American States documented it during a recent mission to the deeply unequal and divided country. Castillo, however, squand
