India emerged much stronger after Covid-19: EAC-PM member Sanjeev Sanyal

India has emerged clearly much stronger after the COVID-19 pandemic and it was acknowledged by the world, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) member Sanjeev Sanyal said on Friday. Addressing an event organised by the industry body Confederation of Indian Industry, Sanyal said India is the fastest-growing major economy and its economic growth rate will be twice of China's economic growth. He also pointed out that India is the 5th largest economy in the world, and the country is finally at the big table. "This requires us to think big," the EAC-PM member said. On October 6, the World Bank projected a 6.5 per cent growth rate for the Indian economy for 2022-23, a drop of one percentage point from its June 2022 projections, citing the deteriorating international environment. The Reserve Bank of India recently slashed the growth projection to 7 per cent for the current fiscal year from the earlier forecast of 7.2 per cent, citing aggressive tightening of monetary .

German health minister urges stepped-up Covid measures amid surge in cases

Germany's health minister on Friday urged the country's 16 states to consider stepping up their measures against the coronavirus amid a rise in new cases. Karl Lauterbach said he favours requiring mask-wearing indoors, a measure that has largely faded in Germany except on public transport, in medical facilities and care homes. The direction we're going in isn't a good one," Lauterbach told reporters in Berlin. He added that it would be better for states to impose limited restrictions now than stricter ones later. The sooner we step on the brake the better it will be. German authorities registered over 114,000 newly confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, and 165 COVID-related deaths. A rise in cases in Bavaria has been linked to the recent Oktoberfest, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Lauterbach said more could have been done to limit the spread of the virus at the beer festival in Munich, such as offering or mandating on-site testing for visitors. The Hea

Symptomatic Covid-19 infection linked with poor mental health: Lancet study

Having symptoms of COVID-19 infection is associated with poorer mental health and lower life satisfaction, according to a study published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal. The team, led by researchers at King's College London and University College London (UCL) in the UK, looked at the impact of COVID-19 infection on subsequent mental health and wellbeing. Data was taken from 11 longitudinal studies between April 2020 and April 2021, in which there were 54,442 participants with and without self-reported COVID-19. Researchers found that rises in psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and lower life satisfaction were associated with prior self-reported COVID-19. The associations with poorer mental health did not lessen over time after infection, highlighting the potential enduring impacts of the disease and the need for a longer follow-up process from healthcare providers. Self-reported COVID-19 was consistently associated with psychological distress, regardless of whether peop

Biden administration extends Covid public health emergency till Jan 11

The Biden administration said on Thursday that the COVID-19 public health emergency will continue through January 11 as officials brace for a spike in cases this winter. The decision comes as the pandemic has faded from the forefront of many people's minds. Daily deaths and infections are dropping and people many of them maskless are returning to schools, work and grocery stores as normal. The public health emergency, first declared in January 2020 and renewed every 90 days since, has dramatically changed how health services are delivered. The declaration enabled the emergency authorisation of COVID vaccines, testing and treatments for free. It expanded Medicaid coverage to millions of people, many of whom who will risk losing that coverage once the emergency ends. It temporarily opened up telehealth access for Medicare recipients, enabling doctors to collect the same rates for those visits and encouraging health networks to adopt telehealth technology. One in 20 people suffer long-term effects of Covid-19, says study

One in 20 people suffer long-term effects after infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to one of the largest such studies to date. The research, published recently in the journal Nature Communications, found that long-COVID symptoms were more likely following severe infections requiring hospitalisation. The most reported long-COVID symptoms included breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, and confusion, or 'brain fog', the researchers said. Long-COVID was also more likely in individuals who were older, female and those from deprived communities, they said. The Long-CISS (COVID In Scotland Study) -- found that 1 in 20 people who took part in the research had not recovered from having COVID-19 at their most recent follow up -- between six and 18 months following infection with SARS-CoV-2. The CISS study was set up in May 2021 to understand the long-term impact of COVID-19, and compare it with the health and wellbeing of people who had not yet been ..
