Cyclone Biparjoy: Flood-like situation in 3 Rajasthan districts, 59 rescued

Fifty-nine people were rescued on Sunday from Rajasthan's Jalore, Sirohi and Barmer districts which are facing a flood-like situation due to heavy rainfall caused by cyclonic storm Biparjoy, officials said. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot spoke to the district collectors of Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer and Pali during the day. The situation is under control and continuous monitoring is being done, the officials added. State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) Commandant Rajkumar Gupta said 39 civilians stranded in flood-affected Od Basti of Bhinmal town in Jalore were rescued and taken to safer places. Twenty people trapped in their houses due to water-logging in the low-lying areas of Dhaurimanna town in Barmer district were rescued by the personnel of the force, he said. 707 women gave birth during Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat: Health Ministry

A total of 707 women gave birth to children during Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat, an official statement said on Sunday.According to the information given by the Union Health Ministry, "During the cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat, 1,206 pregnant women were safely shifted to different hospitals and health and wellness centres from the affected areas, out of which 707 women gave birth to children.""202 ambulances of 108 number were kept on standby in critical condition. 302 government ambulances were also deployed to take the injured to the hospital immediately. Along with this, complete preparations were made for emergency and all trauma facilities in 458 hospitals of the state. Cyclone Biparjoy: Zero deaths, over 1 lakh evacuated to shelter homes

The evacuation of over a lakh people to shelter homes within three days before Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat indicated good coordination between the state and central governments and minimised damage, official sources said on Sunday. They said no deaths have been reported till now because of the cyclone. The cyclone made landfall near Jakhau on the Kutch coast of Gujarat on Thursday evening, felling trees and electric poles and damaging houses. Cyclone Biparjoy: Coast Guard deploys ships, aircraft to assess damage

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has deployed its ships and aircraft for the assessment of damage caused to the Gujarat coast due to Cyclone Biparjoy, the maritime agency said on Sunday. There is so far no report of any adrift boats/objects, it said. The cyclone made landfall near Jakhau on Kutch coast in Gujarat on Thursday evening, felling trees and electric poles and damaging houses. "All units under the Indian Coast Guard north west region headquarters are continuing with response action at the sea post-landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy. Coastal recce and extensive sorties are being undertaken to check any adrift boats/objects at the sea," the ICG said in a statement. It said ICG ships, three Dornier aircraft and ALH MK3 helicopters have been comprehensively deployed in multi-mission mode for the purpose. Industry experts said that the unseasonal rains have affected the demand and brought down temperatures during summer, resulting in fewer use of cooling appliances like air conditioners which guzzle power. The experts said that the peak power demand in the country is unlikely to touch or cross 229 GW level as projected by the Central Electricity Authority due to the impact of unseasonal rains and the cyclone. The power ministry in March had said that according to the Central Electricity Authority estimates the peak electricity demand was expected to be 229GW during April-June when the power demand is the highest in the country. LIC announces relaxations to mitigate hardships for victims of cyclone

Following insurance regulator Irdai directive, LIC on Saturday announced concessions to mitigate the hardships of the claimants of policies and also of Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana affected by the Cyclone Biparjoy. LIC in a statement said it is reaching out to the affected people to provide assistance although the loss of lives has been minimal. Nodal officers have been nominated at Divisional level to liaison with Chief/Secretary/Officer concerned of the State Government in this regard, it said. LIC has also created a portal link for the online submission of claims arising due to Biparjoy Cyclone. 'Bijarjoy' made landfall on the coast of Kutch on Thursday night with a windspeed of 115-125 km/hour causing loss to property and infrastructure in States impacted by the cyclone.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said it was a major achievement of the Gujarat government that no death took place on account of cyclone Biparjoy even though it packed a wind speed of 140 kmph while making landfall. Biparjoy: Irdai directs insurers to fast-track claim settlement process

Insurance regulator Irdai has asked insurers to settle claims in the states affected by cyclone Biparjoy in an expeditious manner. In a circular to CEOs of all general insurance companies, and standalone health insurance companies, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) said it needs to be ensured that all claims are surveyed immediately and claim payments/on account payments are disbursed at the earliest and in any case not exceeding the stipulated timeline. "The insurer shall encourage the policyholder to use electronic communication wherever possible for correspondence while initiating the claim and filing all the relevant documents. Efforts shall be made to ensure that digital processes are resorted to the extent possible for assessment of claims," it said.
