Delhi Police on Wednesday issued a traffic advisory ahead of the two-week-long India International Trade Fair (IITF) being held in the national capital. The trade fair is being organised at Pragati Maidan from November 14 to 27. It is expected to attract around 60,000 visitors daily, with numbers potentially reaching 1.5 lakh on weekends and holidays. According to the advisory, traffic congestion is expected on Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, Ring Road, Shershah Road, and Purana Quila Road. People not attending the fair are advised to avoid or bypass these roads to ensure a hassle-free journey. Business visitors will be allowed to enter the fair from November 14 to 18. Calling it a mere "eyewash", the Supreme Court came down heavily on the Delhi police for failing to comprehensively implement the firecracker ban in the national capital and only seizing raw materials. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih therefore directed the Delhi police commissioner to immediately inform all the stakeholders concerned about the ban order and ensure no sale and manufacture of crackers. "We direct Delhi police commissioner to form a special cell to ensure effective implementation of the ban on fire crackers. The Delhi Police will impose restrictions in parts of Delhi on Saturday for the Run for Inclusion event being organised by Special Olympic Bharat as well as a cycling event from Saturday to Tuesday. In an advisory on Thursday, the police said the Run for Inclusion event, in which people with and without intellectual disability would participate, would be held between 7 and 10 am on Saturday. The event will start from Civil Services/NDMC Officers' Club to Panchsheel Marg via Vinay Marg-Niti Marg-Satya Marg and culminate at the Civil Services/NDMC Officers' Club, it said. Pedestrians continue to be the most vulnerable in road crashes in Delhi, accounting for 43 per cent of the victims, followed by two-wheelers, according to Delhi Road Crash Fatalities Report 2023. The number of deaths in road crashes decreased by 0.55 per cent from 1,264 in 2022 to 1,257 in 2023 in spite of an increase in the number of vehicles registered on road. There has also been an increase in the number of prosecutions from 4,38,052 in 2022 to 6,39,097 in 2023, along with other corrective measures taken by the traffic unit, police said. Amid a rise in air pollution levels in the national capital, the traffic police have imposed penalties to the tune of Rs 47 crore on motorists between October 1 and 24 for pollution certificate violations, an official said on Wednesday. The traffic police have issued over 47,000 challans to motorists. A fine of Rs 10,000 is imposed on motorists for not having a valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate. These challans get released from courts. According to the data provided by the Delhi Traffic Police, a special drive was launched this month in which 47,363 challans for PUC violations were issued to motorists between October 1 and 24. An official said the number of vehicles has increased significantly in the city, causing pollution. Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR in connection with the bomb threat to Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight carrying 180 people and also launched a probe in seven other similar cases reported at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport this month. The Delhi Police has registered an FIR in connection with bomb threats to several domestic and international flights in the last two days and launched a probe into the matter, official sources said on Wednesday. A Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight with more than 180 people on board returned to the national capital on Wednesday afternoon following a bomb threat.
