BJP's outreach in Delhi: EAM to meet Afghan Sikhs, students from Ukraine

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will begin on Thursday his two-day outreach programme under the Delhi BJP's month-long campaign to highlight the achievements of the Modi government in the last nine years. Jaishankar will meet Sikh refugees from Afghanistan who left that country after it was taken over by the Taliban, the Delhi BJP has said in a statement. The Union minister, accompanied by West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma, will also meet a 1984 anti-Sikh riots-affected family at Tilak Vihar, it added. In Basai Darapur, Jaishankar will meet the students who were forced to leave studies in Ukraine due to the Russian invasion of the country, the statement said. He will visit Guru Arjun Dev Gurudwara at Mahavir Nagar in West Delhi at 3 pm where he will meet with Afghan Sikh refugees. Jaishankar, along with former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, has been deputed by the national leadership of the BJP to oversee the month-long campaign in seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi.

Delhi to implement helium leakage detection tech to address polluted water

The Delhi government will implement a helium leakage detection technology in the city to effectively address the problem of contaminated water, minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Tuesday. The technology involves injecting helium gas into a pipeline and then conducting drilling at multiple locations. If there is a leak in the pipeline, the gas will escape and rise to the surface, allowing technicians to precisely pinpoint the location of the leak. The Delhi excise department has warned hotels, clubs and restaurants serving liquor of "stern action", including cancelling licences, if they fail to install functional CCTV cameras on their premises, officials said on Tuesday. Instances of non-functional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at some clubs, hotels and restaurants have come to the notice of the department's enforcement branch during inspections, they said. "It hampers the inspection work of the excise department," an official said. In order to check violations at the hotels, clubs and restaurants, the inspection teams rely on the CCTV footage obtained from their premises. However, often the teams are not provided with the CCTV footage by the licensees on the pretext that the cameras are non-functional, a senior officer of the department said. The Delhi High Court has directed the trial courts in the city to allow a hybrid hearing of the cases listed before them, without any prior request for the same from the parties. The court has directed to ensure that in matrimonial disputes, cases concerning child adoption and child custody, sexual offences or violence against women and those invoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, no one apart from the parties and their counsel can access or join the proceedings digitally. 3.12 cr saplings, 5% above target, were planted in Delhi-NCR in 2022-23

Around 3.12 crore saplings, over 5 per cent more than the target, were planted in Delhi-NCR in 2022-23, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said on Tuesday. It said around 3.57 crore saplings will be planted this year (2023-24) in Delhi and NCR districts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. Of this, around 95 lakh saplings will be planted in Delhi. Around 88 lakh saplings will be planted in Haryana, 23 lakh saplings in Rajasthan and 1.52 crore saplings will be planted in Uttar Pradesh. The Centre's air quality panel said Delhi planted over 39 lakh saplings in 2022-23, which was around 24 per cent more than the target. Authorities in Haryana planted around 88 lakh saplings against the target of 85 lakh, Rajasthan planted 10.58 lakh and Uttar Pradesh 1.73 crore.

Delhi excise policy scam: Manish Sisodia's interim bail plea refused

The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to grant interim bail to AAP leader Manish Sisodia in a money laundering case arising from the alleged excise policy scam. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma, however, allowed him to meet his ailing wife in custody for one day as per her convenience between 10 am and 5 pm. The former Delhi deputy chief minister had sought release on a temporary basis for six weeks on grounds that he was the sole caretaker of his ailing wife. His plea for regular bail in the matter is pending before the high court. Sisodia, who was arrested on March 9, is currently in judicial custody in the case lodged by the ED. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed the plea for interim bail on grounds of possibility of evidence tampering. Delhi Metro completes structural work on stretch of Phase-IV corridor

Delhi Metro has completed the structural work on a stretch of an elevated viaduct on the upcoming Janakpuri West-R K Ashram Marg corridor of Phase 4, officials said on Sunday. The 4-km-long viaduct, starting from Majlis Park to Mukarba Chowk, connects the Majlis Park and Bhalaswa Metro stations on the corridor, they said. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully completed the structural work, it said in a statement. "This particular completed stretch of the elevated viaduct is now being offered to the system contractors for track laying and traction work involving the erection of overhead electrification (OHE) masts etc. "The structural work for the viaduct shall also be completed till Haiderpur Badli soon, as just a crossing over a railway track is left there," it added. Three fire incidents reported in Delhi, no casualties, says official

Three fire incidents, including one that razed 60-70 shanties in Jahangirpuri, were reported in Delhi on Sunday, officials said. However, there were no reports of casualties due to any of the blazes. A fire broke out in a shanty in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri at 10.23 am. Eleven fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the officials said. Around 60 to 70 shanties in a 3,000-square-yard area were gutted in the blaze. The fire caused several cylinders to explode. The blaze was brought under control at 12.30 pm, they said. At the Maulana Azad Medical College, a fire broke out at the old boys' hostel around 6.10 am.
