Intense heatwave: Three hospitals in Delhi record 45 heat-related deaths

The national capital has recorded at least 45 deaths due to suspected heat-related illnesses at Ram Manohar Lohia, Safdarjung and LNJP hospitals here, officials said on Thursday. Delhi has been battling searing heatwave conditions over the last few days. It got some relief on Thursday morning due to light rain. Hospitals in the city have seen a rise in the number of casualties and patients owing to heat stroke. Dr Ajay Chauhan, Professor of Medicine at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said that between May 27 and 9 am of June 19, the Centre-run hospital got 47 cases of heatstroke. In the next 24 hours, 26 heatstroke patients were brought to the hospital, the doctor said. He also said that between May 27 and 9 am of June 19, the hospital recorded 11 suspected deaths of heatstroke and in the next 24 hours seven such suspected deaths were reported. Most heatstroke deaths in Delhi involved comorbidities: Health minister

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday said of the 14 heat stroke patients who died here, almost all had comorbidities which exacerbated their condition. Bharadwaj inspected Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital, where he evaluated the treatment facilities and interacted with heat stroke patients. He also interacted with doctors, stressing the importance of preventive measures against heat-related illnesses and directed them to ensure the availability of all necessary amenities. "According to the information I received, about 310 heat stroke patients were admitted to the hospital in the recent past, out of which 112 patients have recovered and returned to their homes," the health minister said during the inspection, in a statement. "Of the 14 heat stroke patients who died, almost all of them already had some serious diseases like cancer or kidney disease, due to which their condition worsened and they died," he added. Amid heatwave, Delhi's peak power demand reaches record high of 8,647 MW

Persistent heat wave drove the national capital's peak power demand on Tuesday afternoon to 8,647 MW, the highest ever for the city, discom officials said. The previous highest peak power demand of Delhi was 8,302 MW on May 29 this year. Delhi's peak power demand reached 8,000 MW for the first time on May 22, 2024, they said. The extreme heatwave continues to push the city's power demand northwards, soaring to 8,647 MW at 3:22 pm on Tuesday, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre, Delhi. No respite from heatwave, max temp in Delhi can touch 45 degrees Celsius

The national capital on Tuesday recorded a minimum temperature of 33.8 degrees Celsius, six notches above the season's average. The weather department has predicted mainly clear sky and heatwave to severe heatwave conditions and strong surface winds. The humidity was 61 per cent at 8.30 am. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 45 degree Celsius, it stated. The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 degrees in hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 notches. New MP Ramvir Bidhuri urges BJP chief to relieve him as Delhi assembly LoP

BJP MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who was elected to the Lok Sabha, has requested party president JP Nadda to relieve him from the post of the leader of opposition in the Delhi assembly. Bidhuri contested the recently held general elections from the South Delhi parliamentary constituency. RBI cancels licence of Purvanchal Co-op Bank over lack of adequate capital

The Reserve Bank has cancelled the licence of Purvanchal Co-operative Bank, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh as it does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Uttar Pradesh has also been asked to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator, the RBI said in a statement. On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to Rs 5 lakh only from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC). As per the data submitted by the Purvanchal Co-operative Bank, about 99.51 per cent of the depositors are entitled to receive full amount of their deposits from DICGC, the RBI said. Giving details, the RBI said the cooperative bank with its present financial position would be unable to pay its present depositors in full. Over 80 per cent of the street vendors surveyed in Delhi reported a decline in customers during heatwave days in April and May, and around 50 per cent experienced significant income loss, according to a new report by the think tank Greenpeace India and the National Hawker Federation. 'Delhi L-G grants prosecution sanction against Arundhati Roy under UAPA'

Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena has accorded sanction to prosecute author Arundhati Roy and a former professor in Kashmir under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly making provocative speeches at an event here in 2010, Raj Niwas officials said on Friday. The FIR against Roy and former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain was registered following the orders of the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi, they added. An IAF aircraft carrying the bodies of 14 of the 45 Indians who died in a devastating fire at a building in Kuwait is expected to land shortly in Delhi from Kerala's Kochi, newly elected MP Yogender Chandolia said on Friday. A C130J aircraft carrying the bodies of 45 Indians, who died in the incident two days ago in Kuwait's Mangaf, landed at the Kochi international airport around 10.30 am. Thirty-one bodies were received at the Kochi airport by Central and state ministers, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The remaining 14 bodies were sent to Delhi in the same aircraft as a domestic flight from Kochi, airport authorities said.
