Buses except CNG, electric, BS-VI diesel may be barred from entering Delhi

The Delhi government is likely to impose a complete ban on passenger buses except those running on CNG, electricity and BS-VI diesel from entering the national capital in view of the pollution situation. Restrictions under GRAP Stage IV are currently in place in Delhi amid plummeting air quality in the national capital. At present, only trucks are barred from entering the city. A source said, "Chhath Puja is around the corner and there is a huge rush being witnessed because of it. We are planning to implement a ban after the festival." Last month, the Delhi government directed that all buses entering the national capital from Haryana will have to be run on electricity, CNG or BS-VI diesel. Buses entering from the NCR regions of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan also need to follow these norms. The city government's transport department said all buses entering Delhi from any city or town in Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh from July 1 will only be those that run on electricity, CNG

Congress' Delhi chief holds meet of former ministers to discuss pollution

The Congress' Delhi unit chief Arvinder Singh Lovely on Wednesday held a meeting of the 'shadow cabinet' of former ministers to discuss the pollution issue in the national capital, a party statement said. Lovely claimed many lives are lost in the wombs due to the pollution but the central and the Delhi governments have not bothered to draw up a roadmap to find a permanent solution to the problem. Leaders of both these governments are busy campaigning for elections in other states instead of tackling Delhi's woes, Lovely alleged. The meeting unanimously passed two resolutions -- one requesting Lt Governor VK Saxena and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to convene an all-party meet to discuss the pollution issue and the other for setting up of a high-powered monitoring committee headed by a Supreme Court judge and comprising environment experts and civil society members -- according to the statement. The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief said the meeting not only discussed th

AIIMS Delhi takes measures on taxis overcharging patients for short trips

The AIIMS Delhi administration has announced a comprehensive plan to regulate the entry of commercial passenger vehicles into the hospital campus over reports that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers are exploiting unsuspecting patients and their attendants. The initiative aims to ensure fair and transparent transportation services for patients arriving at the medical facility, said Dr Rima Dada, the professor in-charge of AIIMS Media cell. During routine interactions with patients, it came to light that some auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers have been overcharging patients for short trips within the AIIMS campus, Dr Dada said. To address this issue and streamline the entry of commercial passenger vehicles (CPVs), several steps will be implemented as part of which prominent bilingual signages will be installed inside and outside all entry gates of AIIMS, providing information about the availability, routes, and frequencies of electric shuttles. Don't burn crackers, use public transport: Delhi health department

From avoiding outdoor walks to saying no to burning firecrackers, the Delhi health department has advised a slew of measures in view of the pollution in the national capital. The advisory, published in major dailies on Saturday has also underlined that pregnant women, patients with underlying medical conditions, children and the elderly population should be more cautious and avoid exposure to air pollution. However, intermittent rains on Thursday night and Friday brought major relief from the hazardous air lingering over the national capital for two weeks. It also prompted the Delhi government to postpone the implementation of the odd-even car rationing scheme. At 7 am on Saturday, the capital's air quality index (AQI) stood at 219, which is a marked improvement compared to Thursday's 24-hour average AQI of 437. The city experienced "very poor" to "severe" air quality for two weeks starting October 28. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101
