A police officer lost his life on Sunday in a road accident here.Police Inspector Ashok Tiwari of Limachauhan police station lost his life when a dumper truck struck his car in a head-on collision. He died on the spot as his car caught fire after the collision.The incident was reported at the Boda police station area of Rajgarh.
Report: Dubai plane that crashed followed others too closely
A plane involved in a fatal crash that killed four people working on improvements at Dubai International Airport had followed other larger aircraft landing there too closely as air traffic controllers offered inconsistent warnings about the hazard, a preliminary investigative report released Sunday found. The May 16 crash of the Diamond DA62 saw the aircraft roll upside-down in air and smash into a park near the airport at high speed, killing the three Britons and one South African on board, according to the report by the United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority. 5.4-magnitude quake hits China's Sichuan province, 31 injured
Thirty-one people were injured after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Gongxian County in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Saturday, authorities said Sunday. The injured were rushed to the hospitals. Twenty-one of them were hospitalised for observation and treatment, officials of the city of Yibin told media. The quake struck at 10:29 p.m. (local time) Saturday, at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre is monitored at 28.43 degrees north latitude and 104.77 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). Following the quake on Saturday, an aftershock of 4.6-magnitude struck Gongxian County, Yibin, at 8:28 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. 19 injured after 5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Southwest China
At least 19 people sustained injuries after an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter Scale struck Gongxian County in China's southwest province of Sichuan, local authorities said on Sunday.According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 10:29 p.m (local time), was at a depth of 10 kilometres.The injured were rushed to the hospital for treatment. 84 pc of IMD's subdivisions record deficient rainfall; 80 pc reservoirs have below normal storage
With the progress of monsoon still remaining sluggish, 84 per cent of the meteorological subdivisions have recorded deficient rainfall, MeT department data shows. According to the Central Water Commission data, of the 91 major reservoirs in the country, 80 per cent have storage below normal. Of these, 11 have zero per cent storage, making the water crisis acute. The official rainfall season starts from June 1 to September 30, but the overall monsoon deficiency until June 22 still remains around 39 per cent. Of the 36 meteorological subdivisions, 25 per cent have recorded "deficient" rainfall, while six subdivisions recorded precipitation classified under the "large deficient" category. Odisha and Lakhadweep subdivisions have recorded "normal" rainfall. While Jammu Kashmir and East Rajasthan recorded "excess" rainfall, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands registered rainfall under the "large excess" category. Rescuers scour rubble as Cambodia building collapse toll rises to 18
Victims of the Cambodia building collapse were buried alive as they slept, a survivor told AFP on Sunday, as the death toll at the Chinese-owned site rose to 18 and increasingly desperate rescuers picked through the compacted rubble for any further signs of life. There are fears many more workers may be buried as rescuers had scoured barely half of the debris of twisted metal, glass and large concrete slabs after the seven-storey building collapsed on Saturday in the beach resort of Sihanoukville. 10 killed in lightning, thunderstorm & rain in Bihar
At least 10 people were killed in thunderstorm, lightning and rain in Bihar since Friday, officials said on Sunday. Three persons each died in Khagaria and Banka while two died in Jamui and one each in Buxar and Begusarai districts in thunderstorm, lightning and rain which hit the state on Friday and Saturday, the officials said. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Sunday expressed grief over the death of 10 people in past 48 hours due to thunderstorm, lightning and rains in the state, an official release said. He announced payment of Rs 4 lakh to each of the victim's families as ex-gratia. Indigo flight diverted to Bhubaneswar after passenger turns unruly
Hyderabad-Guwahati Indigo flight 6E462 was on Sunday diverted to Bhubaneswar after a passenger turned unruly, airline sources said.Irshad Ali, 20, breached flight safety procedures by trying to open the door of the plane, they said. The passenger was deboarded after the aircraft landed at Bhubaneswar airport at 6.10 am and handed over to police.The flight took off after over an hour for Guwahati, the sources added.
Himachal Pradesh: 2 bikers dead in rockslide accident in Kinnaur
Two bikers died on spot in a rockslide accident on Sunday morning when they were driving in Kinnaur district's Kashang Nala.According to Reckong Peo police, both the victims were tourists, riding their bike towards Kaza when the incident took place at around 06:00 am. They were both residents of Punjab's Zirakpur.The victims have been identified as Sunil Kumar and Uttamchand. Their families have been informed about the accident.The police have recovered the dead bodies and sent it to the district hospital for postmortem.
5.6 magnitude earthquake rattles northern California
An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rattled Humboldt County in northern California on Saturday (local time), according to United States Geological Survey (USGS).The quake struck at a depth of 9.4 kilometres at around 8:53 pm (local time), reported Sputnik.There have been no reports of casualties or damage to the property yet as a result of the quake. Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits California near Pacific Coast
The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 5.5 earthquake has hit near the Pacific coast of Northern California. The agency says the earthquake struck at 8:53 pm at a spot 17.3 miles (27.9 kilometers) southwest of Scotia, a town of 850 people. The earthquake had a depth of 5.6 miles (9 kilometers). Media reports says the earthquake was felt in the region. There are no immediate reports of damage.
Death toll in Cambodia building collapse jumps to 17
The death toll in the collapse of a Chinese-owned building under construction at a Cambodian resort rose to 17 overnight, officials said Sunday, as rescue workers scrambled to find survivors buried under rubble. The building went down before sunrise on Saturday in the casino-resort coastal town of Sihanoukville in southwestern Cambodia, a rapidly developing tourist hotspot awash with Chinese investment. Four people have been detained in connection with the accident, including the Chinese building owner, the head of the construction firm and the contractor. A Cambodian landowner has also been held at provincial headquarters for questioning. A skydiving plane crashed and burst into flames just after takeoff from a small seaside airfield on the island of Oahu, killing 11 people, officials said Saturday. Authorities initially reported that nine people died in the crash Friday evening and that three of them were customers of a skydiving company and six were employees. Shallow 5.3 quake shakes southwest China
A shallow 5.3 earthquake shook China's southwest Sichuan Province on Saturday, less than a week after a larger quake in the same region killed 13 and left dozens injured. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake that occured at about 10.30 pm (local time) at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), according to the US Geological Survey. It hit about 18 kilometres east of the town of Xunchang and 43 kilometres southeast of Yibin city, which has a population of some 250,000 people, USGS said. An earthquake near Yibin struck on Monday, forcing more than 8,000 people to relocate as a large number of structures were damaged or collapsed. State TV showed rescuers dragging survivors to safety from rubble, while cracks appeared in several roads and a major highway was closed. Iran executes 'defence ministry contractor' over spying for CIA: news agency
Iran has executed a "defence ministry contractor" convicted of spying for the CIA, semi-official news agency ISNA reported Saturday. "The execution sentence was carried out for Jalal Haji Zavar, a contractor for the defence ministry's aerospace organisation who spied for the CIA and the American government," ISNA reported, quoting the Iranian military. The news agency did not detail when he was executed.
Lightning kills Maha man talking on mobile phone
A 22-year-old man Saturday died after being struck by lightning while talking on a mobile phone in Maharashtra's Akola district, police said. An official said Abhijit Srikrishna Ingle (22), a resident of Waghjali village in Barshitakali taluka here, was standing under a tree to protect himself from rain when the incident happened at around 4pm. "One more person is injured due to lightning. Ingle was speaking on his mobile phone," he said. Experts have routinely debunked as urban myth the claim that mobile phones attract lightning, stressing that somebody increases their risk of being struck in an electrical storm if they are on high ground, open space, near water or near large metallic structures or trees. Telecom researchers claim mobile phones are low power devices, with handsets generally having insignificant amounts of metal, and do not possess characteristics which could attract lightning.
Make process for new water connections simpler: Kejriwal to DJB
Chief Minister and Delhi Jal Board chairman Arvind Kejriwal Saturday directed officials to make the process for getting new water connections "as simple as possible" and to restart more than 100 "non-functional" tubewells in Malviya Nagar to ensure adequate water supply in the area. At a meeting, attended by DJB CEO Nikhil Kumar and other senior officials, the chief minister was informed that people were facing problems due to the complex process of obtaining a new water connection.
