Pope prays as Frenchman's life support switched off

Pope Francis on Monday said "those who live with severe illness" should have life protected until "its natural end", as doctors in France began turning off the life support of a man in a vegetative state. "We pray for those who live with severe illness," the pope tweeted. "Let us always safeguard life, God's gift, from its beginning until its natural end. Let us not give in to a throwaway culture." The interim director of the Holy See's press office, Alessandro Gisotti, retweeted the pope's words, writing in French that "we pray for Vincent Lambert". Lambert, 42, suffered severe brain damage from a traffic accident in 2008 and doctors were on Monday beginning to turn off his life support systems, in a hugely controversial case. His parents, devout Catholics, have repeatedly launched court action to keep him alive, putting them at odds with Lambert's wife and five siblings who believe the most humane course is to let him die.

Risky driving behaviours may contribute to elevated accident risk

Researchers believe that teens with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), need more than just medication and delay in the age of getting a driving license to decrease accident risks. The multidisciplinary team of researchers analysed detailed crash and traffic violation records for newly licensed drivers to conduct the first large-scale longitudinal study on this topic.Risky driving behaviour is amenable to change, these findings suggested that clinicians and families can work with teens to practice safe driving behaviours and potentially reduce their crash risk."What this study suggested is that we have to go beyond current recommendations of medication and delaying the age of getting licensed to decrease the crash risk for teens with ADHD. Their higher rate of citations suggests that risky driving behaviours may account for why they crash more. More research is needed to objectively measure if and how these behaviours specifically contribute to crash risk," said the lead ..

2018 floods: Kerala govt knocks at HC door to reject report that pointed to lapses in dam management

Kerala government has moved the state high court, seeking to reject the amicus curiae's report pointing out lapses in dam management that aggravated the impact of devastating floods in the state in August last year in which over 400 people died. Except the finding that the reason for deluge was the extremely heavy rainfall between August 15 and August 17, all other causes were on the basis of assumptions not supported by scientific data. These assumptions were on the basis of material rejected or not accepted by the scientific world, the state government said in its affidavit filed in response to the report. Referring to the study on the floods by the Central Water Commission that came out with supporting data, the government felt the CWC report negates any further need for a study. Apart from this, the study by K P Sudhir of IIT-Madras points that the floods happened as 'an act of God', the government said. It claimed the report of Vimal Mishra relied on by amicus curiae Jacob P ...

Teens with ADHD at higher risk of road accidents: Study

Teen drivers diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are significantly more likely to crash, or engage in risky driving behaviours than their peers, a study has found. Researchers from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in the US analysed detailed crash and traffic violation records for newly licensed drivers to conduct the first large-scale longitudinal study on this topic. By highlighting the specific types of crashes and traffic violations, this study identifies risky driving behaviours that those with ADHD may be more likely to engage in, such as driving while intoxicated, not wearing a seat belt, and speeding. Since these behaviours are amenable to change, the findings suggest that clinicians and families can work with this at-risk group of teens to practice safe driving behaviours and potentially reduce their crash risk. "What this study suggests is that we have to go beyond current recommendations of medication and delaying the age of getting ...
