6 killed, 10 hurt in SUV-truck collision in Chhattisgarh

Six people, including a woman and a minor girl, were killed and 10 others injured when an SUV collided with a truck in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district on Monday, a police official said. The mishap took place at Pendari Ghat when 15 people were going in the SUV (sports utility vehicle) from Balrampur district to visit a temple in neighbouring Surajpur, he said. According to preliminary information, the driver of the truck coming from the opposite direction lost control over the wheels due to some technical snag in its gear box. As a result, the truck collided head on with the SUV, killing five people, including drivers of both the vehicles, on the spot, he said. On getting information, a police team rushed to the spot and took the victims to a local hospital where a woman also succumbed to her injuries, the official said. The deceased were identified as Ratu Bhuiya (45), Dhyan Ram Bhuiya (50), Reshma (12), Andulna (45), SUV's driver Pannalal Kushwaha (32), all natives of .

HC irked over state's delay in listing steps to tackle drought

Noting that several districts in Maharashtra were facing a drought-like situation, the Bombay High Court on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the state government's delay in listing out measures to tackle the water crisis. The high court last week directed the government to file its affidavit on Monday in response to an application of activist Sanjay Lakhe Patil, seeking setting up of independent disaster management committees in each district of the state. Patil sought implementation of the 2016 disaster management guidelines, which listed several measures to be undertaken by the state government to tackle natural calamities and disasters, including drought. The government lawyer on Monday sought further time to file the affidavit. "We are aware of the situation in several districts of Maharashtra...we are aware of the seriousness of the situation. Scoot Airways flight makes emergency landing at Chennai airport, all passengers safe

A Singapore-bound Scoot Airways flight made an emergency landing at the Chennai airport in the early hours of Monday after the pilot detected smoke in the aircraft cargo. All the 161 passengers and crew members were safe."Scoot flight TR567, operating Tiruchirappalli-Singapore on 20 May 2019, was diverted to Chennai International Airport, as a precaution, due to a cargo smoke warning trigger," the airline's spokesperson said in a statement.The aircraft landed safely at approximately 3:41 am and was grounded for an investigation. South Korea vows to send aid to North quickly, may send food

South Korea has vowed to move quickly on its plans to provide USD 8 million worth of humanitarian aid to North Korea through international organizations and is also considering sending food to the country that says it's suffering its worst drought in decades. Seoul's Unification Ministry said Monday it will discuss its plans with the World Food Program and the United Nations Children's Fund so the aid reaches North Korean children and pregnant women quickly. Seoul hopes the aid will help revive diplomacy and engagement with Pyongyang that tapered off amid a stalemate in nuclear talks between the United States and North Korea. But Seoul has yet to decide on concrete plans amid public frustration over recent North Korean missile tests.

Two dead after bar roof collapses in southern China

At least two people were killed and several others sustained injuries after the roof of a bar collapsed in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Monday.The incident occurred at 1 am (local time) in the city of Baise, police said.At least 85 people have been rescued from the building, while several others are still feared trapped inside. A Singapore-bound Scoot Airways flight made an emergency landing at the Chennai airport in the early hours of Monday after the pilot detected smoke in the aircraft cargo, authorities said."Singapore-bound Scoot Airways flight TR 567 flying from Trichy (Tamil Nadu) made an emergency landing at Chennai airport after the pilot detected smoke in the aircraft cargo at around 3:40 am today. The pilot had requested an emergency landing, which was granted by the ATC," an airport official said.A total of 161 passengers and crew members were on board when the incident took place. Singapore-bound plane makes emergency landing at Chennai airport

A Singapore-bound flight of a private carrier, which took off from Tiruchirapalli, made an emergency landing at the Chennai airport on Monday following a 'spark' in the engine, officials said. The flight landed safely. Nobody was injured in the incident and all 170 passengers were safely disembarked, they said. The pilots detected the 'spark' while the plane was still in the Indian airspace, the officials said. Immediately, the pilots contacted the Chennai airport for an emergency landing. Permission was granted and fire fighters were put on standby, they said. The passengers were later provided accommodation in city hotels. Technicians are attending to the snag, the officials said.

Pune: Out on picnic, 3 from Mumbai drown in dam

Three people drowned in the backwaters of Jadhavwadi dam here on Sunday afternoon, while three others were rescued by a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).The group (two families) from Mumbai had gone to the dam for a picnic.The NDRF team was undergoing a training session nearby when the incident happened.The three who drowned were rushed to a hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.A case has been registered and an investigation has been initiated into the matter.

Massive fire breaks out at chemical factory near Silvassa

A massive fire broke out at a chemical factory in Masat Industrial Estate near here on Sunday night, officials said. The fire is not yet under control, nearly two hours after it started, said Assistant Divisional Fire Officer, Silvassa, A K Vala. He confirmed no casualty had been reported so far. The fire, which broke out at around 10.00 pm, quickly spread in the factory, causing chemical drums to blast, officials said. "While several fire tenders are working to control it (the fire), we have called for tenders from Daman and Vapi. 4 Americans, 1 Canadian die in small plane crash in Honduras

Four Americans and a Canadian pilot were killed when a small plane went down off the coast of Roatan island in Honduras, officials said Sunday. Armed Forces spokesman Jose Domingo Meza confirmed the nationalities of those who died in Saturday's crash. The Piper Cherokee Six plummeted into the Atlantic shortly after takeoff from the popular tourist destination of Roatan en route to the port of Trujillo. The military said in a statement that rescue boats with police divers and firemen recovered four bodies within minutes of the crash, and transported another to a hospital, where he died shortly after of internal injuries. The US State Department also confirmed the deaths of four US citizens and Global Affairs Canada confirmed that a Canadian also had died.

Three of family drown near Pune

Three members of a family, including a minor, drowned in the backwaters of a dam near Talegaon in the district during a picnic on Sunday afternoon, police said. Three other members of the family were rescued by a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which was holding a training session nearby. The deceased were identified as Prashil Adhav (7), Anil Kolse (58) and Pritesh Agale (32). Talegaon MIDC police said one Gaikwad family from Khed along with their relatives from Mumbai had gone for a picnic near the backwaters of Jadhavwadi dam near Talegaon. "Kolse fell into the water while he walking near the dam. Some of the family members tried to save him, but fell into water," an officer said. "Someone alerted the NDRF team, which was conducting a training nearby. While three were rescued, three others drowned. They were shifted to a hospital, which declared them brought dead," he said. A case of accidental death was registered, police said.

Two rescued from burning car in Delhi

Braving raging flames, personnel of the Delhi Police rescued two persons trapped inside a burning car here, a senior police officer said on Sunday. Kamil, a resident of Jama Masjid and Multazin, who hails from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh escaped unhurt in the incident that occurred at around 11.30 pm on Saturday in northeast Delhi's Dilshad Garden, police said. The duo was on their way from Meerut to Delhi. According to police, they received a call at around 11.30 pm informing them about two persons being trapped inside a burning car near a police booth in Dilshad Garden. "Following the call, a PCR (police control room) van immediately rushed to the spot and found a Chevrolet Beat car on fire. Two persons were struggling to come out of the vehicle," the officer said. Six killed, five injured in separate accidents in Rajasthan

Six persons, including three minors, were killed and five others injured in three separate accidents in Rajasthan on Sunday, police said. A couple and their four-month-old baby were killed when their car collided head on with a truck in the Rajgarh police station area of Churu near Choti bus stand, they said. The deceased have been identified as Manvir Jat (28), her wife Anita Jat (25) and their son Naksh. In Sirohi district, two cousins were killed and three others injured when their car overturned. The incident took place in the Pindwada police station area. The victims were on their way to Abu road from Udaipur, police said. Ami Soni and her cousin Dev Goswami, both aged 14 years, were killed in the accident, they said.
