India grossly underspent on education, health: Tharoor

Successive governments in India did not spend enough on education and health sectors both as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product and annual budgets, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Sunday. In the country, mostly the individuals spend for their treatment and the poor people end up losing everything for getting cured in the private healthcare space, Tharoor said at an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here. Regarding the education sector in the country, he said it was "over-regulated". "The education system followed here is not focussed on creative thinking. Here, students are taught what to think and not how to think. These are encouraged in our classrooms," he said. Tharoor said the government clearly needs to prioritize spending on health, far more than what it has done. "I would not exempt even my previous governments because over 70 years, the expenditure on health and education has been modest," Tharoor added. There is a prime need

Cambridge University opens gin rivalry with Oxford

UK's prestigious Cambridge University has opened a new area for its traditional rivalry with Oxford University by launching its own brand of gin. The world-famous universities will go head to head with their own versions of the spirit as Cambridge announced plans for Curator's Gin to compete with Oxford's Physic Gin, which was launched earlier this year. While Oxford University's gin costing 35 pounds has been distilled from plants in the university's botanic garden, Cambridge says its 40-pound version will combine its botanical influences with apples from a tree linked to the one associated with British physicist Isaac Newton and the famous fruit that fell on his head to get him thinking about gravity. "We had already been making gins for a dozen Cambridge colleges, using botanicals from their college gardens, when the offer came [from the university] asking whether we would like to have the keys to the sweet cupboard," William Lowe, co-founder of the distillery, Cambridge Gin, told .
