Prof Debashis Chatterjee today assumed charge as Director of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) for the second term. IIM-K, which did not have a full time director for nearly four years after Prof Chatterjee completed his term from 2009 to 2014, is the first institute to appoint its own director autonomously after the President gave concurrence to the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017 on December 31. The Maharashtra government will approach the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order to quash quota for students belonging to backward communities in minority degree colleges, state ministers Vinod Tawde and Rajkumar Badole have said. According to a circular the Mumbai University had issued over a decade-and-half ago, minority colleges were required to reserve seats for students belonging to OBC and SC and ST communities apart from the 50 per cent reserved for students from minority communities. The Bombay High Court had scrapped this circular in November last year. Several students' bodies, including the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena, National Students' Union of India and others, had raised the issue before Tawde and Badole during a meeting held at the state secretariat yesterday. Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar today said students would not have to travel outside their state for appearing in NEET from next year as more centres would be set up based on the requirement. "Next year, students travelling to other parts of the country would not happen," he told reporters here. He was responding to questions on complaints about several students from Tamil Nadu being alloted centres outside the state for this year's national eligibility-cum-entrance test. The minister said this year the number of cities were increased to 150 from 107 in the previous years for the exam. "Now apart from those, any district which has more than 4,000 students will be made a centre. It will accommodate all students from that district and surrounding districts," he added. The Madras High Court today issued notice to the Medical Council of India and Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research on a plea seeking a direction to the institute not to allot seats reserved for 'Puducherry Scheduled Community' (P-SC) to non-Puducherry SC students. Admitting the plea moved by A Sarandev, who was denied a seat in the institute, Justice K Kalayanasundaram directed the MCI and JIPMER to file their responses by June 26. According to the petitioner, JIPMER has reserved six seats in MBBS course under P-SC category and such seats are available only to persons belonging to scheduled caste students-Puducherry. Recently, the institute released its merit list for P-SC category in which the petitioner was ranked 10th. A scrutiny of the list revealed that students ranked 1,2,4,6,7 and 8 do not fall under P-SC category since their origin was not Puducherry, counsel for the petitioner Srinivasan said. More than 750 students, faculty and staff members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University participated in the fourth International Day of Yoga celebration today, according to statement from the varsity. The celebrations spanned between June 19 and June 21. On June 19, an essay writing competition on yoga was organised at the Convention Centre of the university. "There were a total of 48 participants in two separate categories - children and youth.
