Students held for bid to burn copy of draft education policy
Members of the DMK's students wing and those belonging to the Revolutionary Students Youth Front staged a demonstration here Friday against the draft educational policy proposed by the Centre. About 200 activists of wing raised slogans against the new educational policy and against the Central and Tamil Nadu governments, police said. Later talking to mediapersons, the wing organiser Manojkumar said NEET has taken a toll on a few lives in the state and in view of this, the Centre should immediate exempt it from the test. A total of 17 students of Revolutionary Students Youth Front was arrested when they tried to burn the copy of the education policy proposed by the Centre. The students raised slogans against the policy that was released by the HRD ministry for suggestions from State governments. The students attempted to burn the copy. However, police immediately overpowered and prevented them from burning.
Tripura to hand over 20 government schools to ISKCON
Tripura government has decided to hand over 20 state-run schools including 13 closed institutions to ISKCON to run them, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said Friday. The 13 schools are closed as they don't have any student. In 147 other government schools there are a maximum of only 10 students, he said. "The council of ministers in its meeting held on Thursday evening decided to hand over 20 schools including the closed 13 schools and seven schools from 147 schools, which have maximum 10 students to the authorities of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who agreed to provide quality education in those schools", Nath told a press conference. 'Indian Tribal Care Trust', a wing of ISKCON would run the schools, Nath said, adding the schools are located in remote and tribal areas of the state. The minister said the BJP-IPFT government which came to power in the state last year after ousting the Left Front was trying to reform the education system in .
Rajasthan govt to set up at least one English medium school in every district: Minister
The Rajasthan government will set up at least one English medium school in every district,School Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasara said Friday. He said the government will also open a student help-centres of the secondary education board in every district. Dotasara said the government has decided to open English medium schools considering the importance of language for children of the state. It will give a chance to children coming from all sections of the society to study in English medium school, he said in a statement. He said that on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the state government has decided that each district will have a school of up to 8th in the name of Mahatma Gandhi.
Now Council clears bill on Maratha quota in PG medical courses
The Maharashtra Legislative Council Friday unanimously cleared a bill to provide reservation to the Maratha community in post-graduate medical courses. This comes a day after the bill was unanimously passed in the Legislative Assembly. The BJP-led state government had earlier promulgated an ordinance to amend the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Reservation Act, 2018 to provide reservation to Maratha students in post-graduate medical courses. On November 29 last year, the Maharashtra Legislature had passed a bill proposing 16 per cent reservation in education and government jobs for Marathas, declared as socially and educationally backward class by the government. However, the admissions to post-graduate medical courses had begun on November 2. Citing this reason, students from the open category had moved the Bombay High Court and the reservation was struck down. 'Easy A' spin-off in the works
A spin-off of Emma Stone's coming-of-age comedy "Easy A" is in the works with scribe of the first film, Bert Royal, attached to write and direct the upcoming movie. "Easy A", which released in 2010, was a teen comedy about a clean-cut high school student who relies on the school's rumour mill to advance her social standing, was directed by Will Gluck. According to Variety, the new movie is still in early development, as Royal is in the process of writing the screenplay. The spin-off will also mark Royal's directorial debut. Yoga day celebrated in UP
The International Yoga Day was Friday observed across Uttar Pradesh, with Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attending the main programme in the state capital. The main programme was held at the Raj Bhawan in the state capital. BJP state vice-president Vidyasagar Sonkar said International Yoga Day functions have been organised across the state and in almost all districts. DoE to probe 'fake letter' circulated among school mgmt committees
The Directorate of Education (DoE) will investigate the origin of a "fake letter" that was circulated among some groups of school management committees, asking parents to whom they will vote in the upcoming assembly polls. It had questions what parents had to say about the AAP government's education policies and for whom they would vote. DoE Director Binay Bhushan said it was a fake letter that had been circulated to create mischief and they would investigate its origin. Sources in the Delhi government said the letter was circulated among some groups of school management committee with a "malicious intention".

This school in Assam accepts plastic waste as fee from students
A school in the pristine woods of Pamohi accepts polythene bags and plastic wastes as the only form of fee. The school makes students pledge that they will not burn plastic. Instead, they will hand over any plastic waste to the school.The Akshar School has the kind of fee structure where children deposit at least 10 to 20 plastic items per week, with a pledge to not burn plastic, said Parmita Sarma, who co-founded the school with Mazin Mukhtar in June 2016."The school gives formal education to more than 100 children belonging to an economically backward category," Sarma told ANI.The school has designed the curriculum fundamentally for poverty-stricken children.Not only do they teach children lessons in science, geography, and mathematics, but also provide vocational skill training so that they can become skilled professionals by the end of the course, said Mukhtar.

UP govt introduces Khadi school uniforms
The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced Khadi school uniforms on a pilot basis in some districts of the state to promote the indigenous fabric among children, the state's basic education minister said on Thursday. "In order to promote Khadi, and also enable the children to know its importance, the state government has decided to introduce Khadi school uniforms in primary schools (classes 1 to 5) in the state on a pilot project basis," Anupma Jaiswal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Basic Education told reporters here. Initially, the project will be implemented in one block each in the four districts of the state including Bahraich from the academic session beginning in July, she added. "As per the results, the pilot project will be replicated across the state," Jaiswal said. The school uniform for boys is dark brown trousers and pink shirts, while for the girls it is dark brown skirts and pink tops. The collars will be brown for both boys and girls.
Discourage use of Tik Tok, PUBG: Goa education dept to schools
The education department of the Goa government has directed schools to discourage students from downloading on their mobile phones popular video-sharing app Tik Tok and multiplayer combat game PUBG. The app and the game create "safety and security" issue for children in the state, it said. In a circular issued to the heads of educational institutions, the department said "the action in time may be of great help in saving some lives." The directions were issued following recommendations of the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The circular, signed by Director, Education Nagaraj Honnekeri, said schools should also call a meeting of Parents Teachers Associations to create awareness about "not to download or use Tik Tok app and PUBG game." The app and the game "create issue of safety and security of children in Goa," it added. Over 1,000 inmates of Delhi prisons to train as yoga teachers
More than 1,000 inmates of prisons in Delhi are going to be trained as yoga teachers within a year under an initiative aimed at helping them start a new life after being released, officials said. The project, 'Sanjeevan', was inaugurated on January 23 after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in this regard between the Prison Department and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) in December 2018, they said. Under the project, instructors from the institute will train inmates in 16 jails in the city, including Tihar, with an aim to provide them life skills so that they can work as yoga teachers and make a living, Director General (Prisons) Ajay Kashyap said. Tihar alone has over 16,000 inmates across its various jails. "It is our job as well as our moral duty to provide some skill to the inmates so that when they can start a new life after being released. And for that particular reason, we have started this project. We do not want any inmate to come back again .
Maha to make Marathi mandatory in CBSE, ICSE schools in state
Maharashtra government will bring in a legislation to make teaching Marathi language compulsory in all schools in the state, including those affiliated to ICSE and CBSE, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Thursday. Fadnavis informed the Legislative Council that there is already a provision for teaching Marathi language in schools attached to non-state education boards. "Despite this, if there are some schools not teaching Marathi language to students, we will initiate action against them," the chief minister said. If needed, the existing law can be amended to ensure that Marathi language is taught in all schools in the state, Fadnavis said. At present, Marathi is a compulsory subject up to class 8 in schools run by the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), a private board which conducts the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) examination. SC reserves verdict on extension of deadline for counselling for PG seats in deemed universities
The Supreme Court on Thursday said it will pass orders on whether to allow deemed universities and private colleges to fill up their vacant seats in PG medical and dental courses by extending the schedule of counselling. The top court said that the question is not whether it has power to do it or not but whether it should allow the deemed universities and colleges to fill up their vacant seats by making an exception to the set schedule of admissions. Deemed universities and colleges claimed that they have around 1,000 seats vacant in the PG medical courses and if stray vacancy counselling round is extended then such seats could be filled.
