'India has started adopting EVs as a mobility solution, and with continuous support from the government, we will make great progress in the coming decade'
The govt subsidy for the purchase of EV to the vehicle makers should continue till the market reaches an EV penetration of 8-10 per cent, said a top official of Greaves Electric Mobility Private Ltd.
Support provided by the government to promote electric and zero emission vehicles through schemes such as FAME II, need to be continued till penetration of such automobiles crosses a particular threshold with a good level of localisation, according to Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh. There is also a case to consider the extension of the FAME II scheme, which will come to an end next year and include bigger electric buses to avail of subsidy, he told PTI. "The government has done a terrific job to promote, or more than promote I would say, ignite electric vehicle or zero emission vehicle demand. Whether it is FAME phase I, phase II, now PLI and state level incentives, a lot of policy measures, the government has really done a terrific job," he said. Wagh further said, "So, our expectation would be that the government continues with this till the electric vehicle penetration crosses a particular threshold where there is a good level of localisation. Once you have a particul
The head of Swiss sports bike maker KTM, which claims to be the world's No 1 premium motorbike brand and also sells tens of hundreds of e-bikes in Europe, is not confident of the capability of electric vehicles beyond a point and feels that optimism on this front is "highly overrated". KTM, which is primarily into high-end racing bikes, has a 50.1:49.9 manufacturing JV with Bajaj Auto. It will also be selling the electric model of the resurrected iconic Chetak scooters from the Bajaj stable in Europe from the first quarter of 2024. "The whole scope and capability of the concept of electric vehicle mobility is highly overrated. It's the result of mixing the laws of physics incorrectly and also by mis-reading the laws of energy," Stefan Pierer, the chief executive of Pierer Mobility that owns the KTM brand, told a select group of journalists at a media roundtable here. "I know it isn't easy to tell and convince the politicians about the sheer impracticality of attempting to make ...

Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles on Tuesday sought extension of subsidies for EVs under the FAME II scheme and also include light to heavy commercial vehicles in it to promote electric mobility. In its pre-Budget recommendations, the industry body also called for a uniform 5 per cent GST on spare parts for electric vehicles. "The validity of FAME II is set to expire on March 31, 2024. We believe FAME's validity needs to be extended since we have yet to meet the penetration the subsidy was supposed to catalyse," Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) said in a statement. The new FAME II scheme should be linked to e-mobility conversion rather than being time-based, it added. The EV industry body said market trends suggest that e-mobility, particularly electric two-wheelers (E2W) has the potential to continue growing once it reaches 20 per cent of the total two-wheeler market. "The subsidy can be tapered thereafter," it said, adding the FAME II scheme shoul
