Australia set England record target of 468 runs to win 2nd Ashes test

Australia have set England a record target of 468 runs to win the second Ashes test in Adelaide after declaring its second innings at 9-230 during the middle session on day four. First-innings centurion Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head top-scored, making 51 apiece, with Cameron Green adding an unbeaten 33 as Australia sought quick runs in the evening session. England will need to create history to win with the highest successful fourth-innings test run chase being the West Indies' 7-418 against Australia in 2003. The highest successful fourth-innings chase in Adelaide is Australia's 6-315 to beat England in 1901/02. Earlier Sunday, England's bowlers took three early wickets to stall Australia's push for victory, despite an injury in the warm-up for captain Joe Root which prevented the English captain from taking the field for the start of play. Resuming Sunday at 45-1, Australia lost opener Marcus Harris, Steve Smith and nightwatchman Michael Neser early, before a rally by ...

It's all a bit friendly, get nasty: Vaughan's advice to England

England are being "too nice" and need to "get nasty" against Australia in the Boxing Day Test to fight back in the ongoing Ashes series, feels former skipper Michael Vaughan. England suffered heavy defeats in the first two Tests to be down 0-2 in the five-match series. "It's too nice," Vaughan, who led England to 26 wins in 51 Tests, including the 2005 Ashes, said on Fox Cricket's Follow-On podcast. "I see on the morning of the game they are all talking to Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. I never had a conversation with Steve Waugh back in the day. I wouldn't have dared go and speak to Glenn McGrath on the morning of the game or Shane Warne. You just didn't. "It's all a bit friendly. I'd get nasty with them They somehow need to find that on day one. Get into the scrap. Chirp, do whatever, just get into the scrap." Vaughan wants England to bring a change in their attitude on the field. "They are at that stage now where they have to change something," the 47-year-old vaughan, who s

England allrounder Stokes is back, and with a bit of perspective on cricket

England allrounder Ben Stokes is finding some perspective after returning to cricket from a six-month absence due to a finger injury and for a mental health break. Stokes sent down 25 overs in taking 3-113 in a draining, physical effort in the second Ashes test at Adelaide, part of the 150 overs England spent in the field over the first two days. England will resume on Saturday's third day of play in trouble at 17-2 in reply to Australia's imposing 473-9 declared. It has been a tough two days, Stokes told Australian Associated Press. It's never ideal but you have just got to love the dirt when you get that deep and understand what you're playing for. Stokes also took a wider view of England's struggles, noting the tragic jumping castle accident in Tasmania on Thursday which killed five children. The reason why the Australians were wearing the black armbands today puts a lot of things into perspective, he said. Stokes was upbeat about his return. I have loved every minute of it, h

Ashes: Expected too much from Ben Stokes in 1st Test, admits Joe Root

England Test skipper Joe Root has admitted that he expected too much out of all-rounder Ben Stokes in the first Ashes Test.England and Australia will lock horns in the second Test, beginning Thursday at Adelaide. Australia won the first Test by nine wickets to gain a 1-0 lead in the five-match series."It was a huge ask and I'm probably as guilty as anyone; I expected too much of him. It's because I see him almost as a bit of a superhero. Look at what he's done in the last few years when he's played; at least once a series, maybe twice a series, he's done something extraordinary which has won us a game on its own. And you do get a little complacent about expecting that," ESPNcricinfo quoted Root as saying."It's easy to forget on a big occasion like that, whether it's because he's not played a huge amount and also what he's had to go through recently as well, I think there was a bit too much on him. But you know the character he is, it'll have motivated him even more now to put in one ..
