: An elephant calf fell into a trench in the Mettupalayam Forest Range on the outskirts of the city and was rescued, forest officials said Saturday. Hearing the trumpeting, the officials went to the spot, pulled the one-year-old elephant out of the trench and re-united the animal with its herd after a three-hour-long rescue effort. The calf was moving with the herd when it fell into the pit and couldn't come out while the rest of the herd managed to, the officials said. The trench was created on the fringes of a farmland bordering the forest area, they said.

A Russian Arctic archipelago on Saturday declared an emergency situation over an "invasion" of dozens of aggressive polar bears that have entered homes and public buildings. Russia's northeastern Novaya Zemlya archipelago, which has a population of around 3,000 people, has appealed for help to tackle "a mass invasion of polar bears into inhabited areas," regional authorities said in a statement. Russian authorities have so far refused permission to shoot the bears but are sending a commission to investigate the situation and have not ruled out a cull. Polar bears are affected by global warming with melting Arctic ice forcing them to spend more time on land where they compete for food. The official Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday that local authorities had sent veterinarians, medicine and animal feed to the hard-hit areas in Qinghai Province's Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Villages in the area are above 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) and workers were seeking to clear roads to ensure the delivery of supplies, a task made more difficult by high winds and drifting snow. Mainly ethnic Tibetan villagers in the area depend heavily on livestock, mainly Yaks, goats and sheep, for their livelihoods and to feed their families. Harsh winters are routine in the Himalayan region that long fell within Tibet's traditional borders.
A 17 year-old boy was killed by a leopard when he was working in fields in a village adjacent to the Katarniyaghat forest area here, officials said Saturday. On Friday evening, Bindra was attacked by the big cat in Nibiya Ghaudi village, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) G P Singh said. His family members, who were nearby, burnt firecrackers to force the leopard to flee but the victim had died by then, the officer said. The family of the deceased is being extended monetary help as per rules, the DFO said, adding teams were sent to the village to ensure that the animal returned to the forest area.

For ten days, the London Zoo kept its newly arrived male Sumatran tiger Asim in a separate enclosure from Melati, the female tiger who was supposed to become his mate. Three persons were taken ill Friday after inhaling gas that leaked from Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), officials said. The gas leak was detected in one of the blast furnace of the plant, A DSP spokesperson said. "Three persons felt sick after inhaling the gas in one of blast furnace area. One person had been released after first aid while two others have been been kept under observation in the plant's hospital," the official said. Plant operations remained normal but a high level committee has been formed to look into the matter, the official said. DSP is one of the five integrated steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

European Union member states adopted a Franco-German compromise on Friday allowing Berlin to remain the lead negotiator with Russia on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Europe. France, a pivotal player in the EU gas talks, had said earlier it would support European Union oversight of new offshore energy pipelines. This had raised concerns in Berlin that resistance from other EU members could undermine plans for the undersea pipeline between Russia and Germany. But Paris and Berlin now agree that chief responsibility lies with Germany, the "territory and territorial sea of the member state where the first interconnection point is located," according to a text seen by AFP. South African rescuers said Friday that they had been forced to halt an operation to rescue about 20 people trapped in a disused mine, blaming disruption from workers who had not been paid. Six people died after trespassing into the Gloria coal mine near the town of Middelburg in the eastern province of Mpumalanga, police told AFP, updating the earlier death toll of five. The group went underground between Sunday and Wednesday to allegedly steal copper cables in the mine, which had been closed for several months.
