Police fire tear gas shells as farmers gather at Shambhu border near Ambala

Security personnel fired some tear gas shells on farmers Wednesday morning at the Shambhu border near Ambala as the peasants gathered there to resume their 'Dilli Chalo' protest, the agitators claimed. The protesting farmers from Punjab plan to make a fresh attempt to break past the multiple layers of barricades at the border with Haryana in attempt to march to Delhi to press for various demands. The Haryana security personnel lobbed a few tear gas shells at around 8 am on Wednesday when some farmers gathered near the barricades at the Shambhu border, the protesters claimed. On Tuesday, farmers had clashed with Haryana Police at two border points between the states, facing tear gas and water cannons as they tried to break the barricades blocking their protest march to the national capital. After a face-off with police that lasted several hours on Tuesday, farmer leaders called off the protest for the day. They said they would resume the march from Shambhu on Wednesday. The Samyukt

Don't divide Punjab and India, says Mann; criticises Haryana's barriers

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday accused the Haryana government of creating a border "between Punjab and India", referring to the concrete blocks, nails and barbed wire placed on some roads to scuttle the farmers' proposed 'Delhi Chalo' march. He said the Manohar Khattar-led Haryana government has placed as much barbed wire at the state's borders with Punjab as there is at the country's border with Pakistan. Khattar, however, justified the steps taken by his government to seal the state's borders and stop Punjab farmers from marching towards the national capital, saying the arrangements are aimed at maintaining law and order. Haryana authorities have sealed the state's border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala district, placing concrete blocks, sandbags, barbed wire and anti-riot vehicles on the roads going towards Delhi. Elaborate arrangements have been made at the state's borders with Punjab in Jind and Fatehabad districts as well. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha ...

Delhi Chalo march: Punjab-Haryana border sealed at Shambhu in Ambala

Ahead of the farmers' proposed 'Delhi Chalo' march on February 13, Haryana authorities have sealed the border with Punjab at Shambhu near Ambala. Elaborate arrangements are in place at the borders in Jind and Fatehabad districts to stop the march. Apprehending the disturbance of peace, the Haryana government has also suspended mobile internet services and bulk SMS in seven districts -- Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa -- from February 11 to 13. Amid measures by the Haryana authorities to prevent the farmers from heading towards the national capital, the Centre has invited them to hold another meeting to discuss their demands on February 12. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had announced the 'Delhi Chalo' march by more than 200 farmers' unions on February 13 to press the Centre into accepting several demands, including the enactment of a law to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for crops. CBI files charge sheet against Bhupinder Hooda's former principal secy

The CBI has filed a charge sheet against retired IAS officer Murari Lal Tayal, who was the principal secretary of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, for allegedly amassing assets worth Rs 14 crore which were disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said on Friday. In its charge sheet filed before the Panchkula Special Court on Thursday, the CBI alleged that Tayal, his wife Savita and son Kartik acquired assets worth Rs 14.06 crore during 2006-14 which were 81.11 per cent above their legitimate sources of income, they said. The agency filed its report after more than six years of probe against Tayal, a 1976-batch IAS officer who was Hooda's principal secretary during 2005-2009. The CBI had registered an FIR against Tayal, his Savita Tayal and other family members in 2017 for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets. AAP to 'gherao' Haryana CM's residence on Feb 7 over unemployment issue

The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday targeted the BJP-JJP coalition in Haryana over the unemployment issue and said it will 'gherao' Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's residence in Karnal for allegedly "failing" to give jobs to the state youth. Addressing the media here, AAP's Haryana unit president Sushil Gupta claimed that more than two lakh jobs were lying vacant in various government departments and accused the Khattar government of not filling these posts. Gupta said out of two lakh vacant posts, 71,000 are in the education department, 21,000 in the police department and 10,000 in the transport department. "But the government is not filling these posts," he alleged. Gupta said that because of the lack of employment opportunities in the state, many youths are becoming victims of depression and drugs. Several youths were resorting to adopting illegal methods in order to migrate to other countries because of not getting jobs, he said. He slammed the state government over the issues
