The Goa Tourism Department has approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking extension of the 11 pm deadline for serving alcohol in the bars and restaurants in the state during the ongoing poll season. The ECI has imposed a ban on serving liquor after 11 pm. The state's tourism industry, however, says the decision has impacted its business. For the first time, a three-member team of women climbers from India, Nepal and China on Tuesday set out to scale the world's highest peak, Mt Everest, to spread the message of women empowerment, world peace and friendship. A delegation of Himachal Pradesh bar and restaurant owners Tuesday met Chef Minister Jai Ram Thakur and urged him to withdraw the hike in annual licence fee for serving liquor in bars and restaurants. Shimla Hotel and Restaurant Association president Sanjay Sood said the chief minister assured the delegation to take necessary steps in this regard after the general elections. Sood criticised the hike in annual licence fees in the new policy from Rs 2.5 lakh in 2018-19 to Rs 3.75 lakh in 2019-20 with 10 per cent security for serving and sale of alcohol in bars and restaurants. He said if their demands are not met soon, the 500 odd bar owners will be left with no option but to surrender their licences as the business of running bar has become unviable under the new excise policy implemented since April 1.
The residents of a village in Chhattisgarh's tribal-dominated Jashpur district have decided to boycott Lok Sabha polls in protest against what they claimed was lack of road and water facilities there. Residents of Darupisa village in Dokda panchayat have put up a banner declaring their intent to skip polls scheduled in their area on April 23. The village is part of the Kunkuri assembly segment and Raigarh (ST) Lok Sabha seat. "Public representatives have never paid heed to our long pending demands for a connecting road and water facilities. Due to this apathy, we don't have access to education and health facilities," said village head Alex Toppo. While politicians, campaigning for last year's Assembly polls, had promised to look into their demands, they forgot about it once the elections were over, Toppo alleged.
