A record-breaking 65.2 million tourists visited New York in 2018, its tourist board said Wednesday, with British people particularly keen to visit the Big Apple from overseas. According to new figures from NYC & Company, around 51.6 million Americans and 13.5 million foreign tourists visited the city last year -- compared to 13.1 overseas visitors in 2017. Britons topped the list of overseas visitors, with 1.24 million, followed by China (1.1 million), Canada (1 million), Brazil (920,000) and France (807,000). New York ranked the 6th most-visited city in the world for foreign tourists, according to Mastercard's annual Global Destination Cities list published in September, based on a projected 13.1 million visitors. Bangkok topped that list, ahead of London, Paris, Dubai and Singapore. Harassment by the police was one of the reasons fewer tourists visit Goa for ringing in the New Year, state Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said Wednesday. The police should go after drug racketeers and not target "innocent tourists", he said. "There are several reasons why tourism has gone down. One of them is the harassment meted out to innocent tourists by the police department in Goa," Ajgaonkar told reporters. He was speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting of MLAs to discuss the Draft Tourism Policy 2018. Police often stop tourists during the late hours and harass them, he said. "Tourists are our guests. They should not be harassed this way. This kind of behaviour sends a wrong signal about Goa to the world," Ajgaonkar said. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday wrote to the Centre seeking early sanction of 30 road project proposals to the tune of Rs 1261.98 crore. In his letter to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the chief minister said the proposals, mostly for tribal and backward areas of the state, were submitted to the ministry on December 20, 2018 for approval under Central Road Fund (CRF) Scheme. Of the 30 projects, 29 are related to widening and maintenance of roads and one proposal pertains to construction of a high-level bridge over river Subarnarekha at Haladipada near West Bengal border, he said. "Except for one road project in Puri district, which is necessary for the convenience of tourists, all the other projects pass through tribal and backward pockets in 13 districts of the state," Patnaik said in the letter, a copy of which was made available here. A leopard snatched away a three-year-old girl from her mother's lap after entering their home at a tea garden in West Bengal's Alipurduar district, officials said Wednesday. Parts of her body were found scattered in the Garganda tea garden in Madarihat area of the district this morning. The leopard sneaked into the house in the labour line on Tuesday night and grabbed Pranita, who was on her mother's lap, the officials said. Pranita's mother Puja Oraon fought the leopard but failed and it fled with the baby. "I tried my best. It was so large... I could not save her," said a crying Oraon. Locals searched for the girl the entire night but could not find her, the officials said, adding that parts of her body were found in the tea garden this morning.
Goa Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo on Tuesday said that tourism in Goa has been on the decline for a year and a half and while emphasising on the drop in the number of foreigner tourists, he pointed the blame towards Indian tourists and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.Lobo said that foreigners are harassed by domestic tourists for taking selfies and that Indian tourists who visit Goa think every girl on the beach is 'available'.
